Boundless Daily: Day 37 - The Role of the Holy Spirit

Have you ever stood in a field and felt a sudden, rushing wind? You can’t see the air itself, but you see the results. You see the tall grass bend and sway. You feel the cool pressure against your skin. You hear the rustle of the leaves.

The Holy Spirit is a lot like that wind. In fact, the Bible often uses the word Pneuma, which means breath or wind, to describe Him.

As we dive into Day 37 of our Boundless Daily journey, we are looking at a foundational piece of our faith. For those of us following the Assemblies of God (AG) Statement of Fundamental Truths, we are leaning into Truth #7: The Baptism in the Holy Spirit. But before we talk about the "Baptism," we have to understand the Person.

Who is the Holy Spirit, and what exactly does He do in our lives every day?

Not an "It," but a "He"

One of the biggest hurdles we face is thinking of the Holy Spirit as a cosmic force or a vague energy. But the Bible is very clear: the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity. He has a mind, a will, and emotions. He can be grieved, He can be quenched, and He can be invited into our deepest moments.

He is God with us, right now.

When Jesus was preparing to leave His disciples, He didn't tell them, "Good luck, you're on your own." Instead, He promised to send a Comforter, a Helper who would be just like Him. The Holy Spirit is the presence of Jesus made available to every person, in every time zone, at every moment. Whether you are a nurse working the graveyard shift in a quiet hospital wing or a parent struggling to find peace in a chaotic household, the Spirit is there.

The Gentle Whisper of Conviction

Before we even start our journey with God, the Holy Spirit is already working. Think back to the moment you first realized you needed Jesus. That wasn't just a random thought or a guilty conscience. That was the Holy Spirit.

One of His primary roles is conviction. This isn't the same as condemnation. Condemnation makes you want to hide from God; conviction makes you want to run to Him. He reveals the gap between where we are and where God’s holiness is, and then He points us directly to the Cross.

Once we say "yes" to Jesus, the Spirit performs a miracle called regeneration. He literally breathes life into our spirits. We go from being spiritually dead to being "born again." This is the beginning of our Rejoice in Redemption story. He then "seals" us. It’s like a royal wax seal on a letter, signifying that we belong to the King.

The Sanctifier: Growing More Like Jesus

If salvation is the starting line, sanctification is the marathon. And let’s be honest: it’s a long race.

The Holy Spirit is the power source for our growth. Left to our own devices, we tend to drift back into old habits, old tempers, and old ways of thinking. But the Spirit is constantly working within us to produce "fruit." Love, joy, peace, patience... these aren't things we can just "try harder" to do. They are the natural overflow of a life that is connected to the Spirit.

He also acts as our Teacher. When you open your Bible and a verse suddenly jumps off the page and speaks directly to your current situation, that is the Spirit illuminating the Word. He takes the Inspired Truth of God’s Word and applies it to your specific heart.

He helps us understand who God is. He reminds us of what Jesus said. In the middle of a hard decision, He provides that "still, small voice" that says, “This is the way; walk in it.”

Empowerment for the Mission

This brings us to the core of AG Truth #7: The Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that the Holy Spirit doesn't just want to live within us for our own comfort; He wants to come upon us for power. In Acts 1:8, Jesus said, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses..."

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience following salvation. It is an enduement of power for life and service. Why do we need it? Because the mission of the Church is too big for human talent.

We are a global community. We reach out to people in persecuted areas, individuals living with disabilities who can't leave their homes, and seekers who have never stepped foot in a traditional building. To reach the world, we need more than just good tech tools (though we love those, as seen in our look at church tech tools). We need the supernatural empowerment of the Spirit.

This empowerment shows up in many ways:

  • Boldness: The ability to share your faith when you’d normally be shy.

  • Spiritual Gifts: Wisdom, healing, prophecy, and tongues: given as the Spirit wills to build up the Church.

  • Endurance: The strength to keep going when life is heavy or when you are facing spiritual opposition.

The Spirit in Your Daily Life

It’s easy to talk about the Holy Spirit in a "theological" way, but how does this work when you’re folding laundry or staring at a mounting pile of bills?

The Holy Spirit is called our "Paraclete": the one who walks alongside us.

If you are a caregiver feeling burnt out, the Spirit is your Comforter. He provides a peace that "transcends all understanding." If you are a student or a worker trying to navigate a complex problem, He is your Counselor. If you are someone struggling with an addiction or a recurring sin, He is your Deliverer.

He is the one who makes Jesus "real" to us. Without the Spirit, Christianity is just a set of rules and a history book. With the Spirit, it is a living, breathing relationship.

Walking in Step

So, how do we respond to this role of the Holy Spirit?

First, we invite Him. It sounds simple, but we often forget to ask for His help. Every morning, try saying, "Holy Spirit, I welcome You into my day. Lead me, speak through me, and empower me."

Second, we listen. In our noisy world, we have to intentionally create space to hear Him. Maybe that’s listening to the Boundless Podcast during your commute or taking five minutes of silence before you start your shift.

Third, we obey. When He prompts you to reach out to a friend, or to hold your tongue in an argument, or to give generously, do it. The more we respond to His "nudges," the more clearly we begin to recognize His voice.

A Community Led by the Spirit

Boundless Online Church isn't just a website; it’s a gathering of people who believe that God’s Spirit knows no borders. Whether you’re joining us for Sunday Live Worship or catching up on Sunday Sermons, our goal is always the same: to create an environment where the Holy Spirit can move.

We don't have to be in the same room for the Spirit to connect us. He is the original "wireless network," connecting believers across the globe in one body, one faith, and one purpose.

If you’ve been feeling dry, empty, or like you’re just "going through the motions" of faith, we want to encourage you. The Holy Spirit is ready to refresh you. Like that rushing wind in the tall grass, He is moving. All you have to do is step out into the field.

Do you have questions about the Holy Spirit? Maybe you’ve heard things that confuse you, or you’re wondering if this "power" is really for you. We would love to chat with you about it. Our community is a safe place to explore these deep truths together.

You aren't walking this path alone. You have a Helper. You have a Guide. You have the very breath of God living within you.

Boundless Online Church is a ministry of FA Memphis.
