Boundless Daily: Global Micro-Study - Day 22: The Baptism in the Holy Spirit

Hey everyone, Layne here. Welcome back to Day 22 of our Global Micro-Study. We’ve been walking through the core pillars of our faith, and today we’ve arrived at a topic that is absolutely central to who we are as a community at Boundless Online Church.

If you’ve been following along, you know we lean heavily into the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. Today, we’re looking at Truth #7: The Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

For many of you joining us from around the world, whether you’re catching this on a break during a late-night shift, or you’re logging in from a place where attending a physical church isn’t an option, this teaching is for you. This isn't just "churchy" talk. This is about power. It’s about the fuel that keeps our faith moving forward when the world feels heavy.

What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

Let’s keep it simple. When we talk about the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, we are talking about a special experience where God pours out His Spirit upon a believer in a way that provides extra strength, boldness, and spiritual gifts.

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe this is an experience that is distinct from and follows the experience of the "new birth" (salvation). Think of it like this: salvation is like getting the keys to a house. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is like turning on the electricity. You’re already in the house, but now you have the power to light up the rooms and get things moving.

We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and part of that growth is realizing that you weren't meant to live the Christian life on your own strength.

A Promise for All Believers

One of the most beautiful things about this experience is that it isn't reserved for the "super-spiritual" or just for pastors. It is a gift promised to every single person who follows Jesus.

In Acts 1:8, Jesus told His disciples, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Notice He didn't say, "You might receive power," or "Some of you will get it." He said you will.

For those of you in our Boundless community who feel isolated or perhaps even persecuted for your faith, this promise is your lifeline. You don't need a cathedral or a massive choir to experience this. You can be in a hospital room, a factory floor, or a quiet bedroom, and the Holy Spirit can meet you right there.

Why Does It Happen After Salvation?

Some people ask, "Don't I get the Holy Spirit when I get saved?"

The answer is yes! You cannot belong to Christ without the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9). However, we see in the Bible that there is a subsequent experience, an immersion, that happens after someone has already believed.

Take the believers in Samaria in Acts chapter 8. They had believed and been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, but the Holy Spirit had not yet "come on" them in this specific way. Peter and John had to go and pray for them to receive the Holy Spirit.

Why does this matter? Because it shows us that God always has "more" for us. There is always a deeper level of intimacy and a greater level of empowerment available. If you’ve felt like your spiritual life has hit a plateau, maybe it’s time to ask the Father for this gift.

The Initial Physical Sign

At Boundless, we align with the AG teaching that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking in other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance (Acts 2:4).

I know for some, this can feel a bit intimidating or confusing. But when you look at it through a visionary lens, it’s actually quite beautiful. Tongues is a language given by God that allows our spirit to communicate directly with Him, bypassing our human limitations.

It’s a sign that says, "I am fully surrendered." When we give God control of our speech, the hardest part of our body to tame, we are telling Him we trust Him with everything.

Empowerment for the Mission

The main purpose of this baptism isn't just to have a "cool" spiritual experience. The purpose is witnessing.

We are a digital church serving those who cannot attend in person. Many of you are the only Christians in your family or your workplace. That can be exhausting. You might feel like you don’t have the right words to say or the courage to stand up for what you believe.

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit gives you that "Holy Ghost boldness." It’s the difference between Peter denying Jesus to a servant girl and Peter standing up in front of thousands on the Day of Pentecost and declaring the Gospel.

How to Seek the Baptism

If you haven't experienced this yet, I want to encourage you: don't overcomplicate it. It is a gift. You don't earn a gift; you simply receive it.

  1. Ask: Jesus said in Luke 11:13, "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" Just ask.

  2. Believe: Trust that God wants to give you this power.

  3. Surrender: Spend time in worship and prayer. Create space for God to move.

  4. Receive: By faith, begin to praise Him. As the Spirit moves, step out and speak as He gives you the words.

We have a wonderful community of people who can pray with you and walk with you through this. Check out our Groups page to find others who are on this same journey.

A Vision for Our Global Family

My vision for Boundless Online Church is that we wouldn't just be a group of people watching videos, but a global army of Spirit-filled believers.

Imagine thousands of us, from every time zone, every background, and every physical ability, operating in the power of the Holy Spirit. Imagine the impact we can have on the digital world when we are fueled by the same fire that started the church 2,000 years ago.

Distance doesn't stop the Holy Spirit. Disability doesn't stop the Holy Spirit. A busy schedule doesn't stop the Holy Spirit.
