Christian Living: What Is the Assemblies of God? A Beginner’s Guide to Our Pentecostal Roots in Memphis

Walking into a new church can feel a bit like arriving in a foreign country without a map. You hear terms like "Pentecostal," "Spirit-filled," or "Assemblies of God," and you might wonder exactly what those labels mean for your daily life. Whether you are a lifelong Memphian looking for a church home in the 901 or a digital seeker joining us from across the globe, understanding these roots helps you see the heart behind everything we do at First Assembly Memphis and Boundless Online Church.

What is the Assemblies of God?

The Assemblies of God (AG) is a Spirit-filled, Bible-centered Protestant fellowship founded on the belief that the Bible is God’s inspired Word. We emphasize a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit, and a mission to share the Gospel locally and globally.

As of today, the Assemblies of God is one of the largest Pentecostal denominations in the world, with over 69 million members globally. But at its core, it remains a family of believers committed to the simple, powerful truths of Scripture.

Term

Biblical Definition

Salvation

The deliverance from sin and its consequences, brought about by faith in Jesus Christ alone.

Sanctification

A lifelong process of being set apart for God and becoming more like Jesus through the Holy Spirit.

Spirit Baptism

An experience distinct from salvation that empowers a believer for witnessing and spiritual service.

Repentance

A sincere turning away from sin and turning toward God with a changed heart and mind.

The 16 Fundamental Truths: Our North Star

Every church needs a foundation. For the Assemblies of God, that foundation is built on 16 Fundamental Truths. These aren't just rules; they are the "why" behind our worship, our preaching, and our community outreach in Memphis and beyond.

  1. The Scriptures Inspired: We believe the Bible is the ultimate authority for how we live.

  2. The One True God: Revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  3. The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ: He is fully God and fully man.

  4. The Fall of Man: We all need God's grace because of sin.

  5. The Salvation of Man: Restoration with God comes only through Jesus.

  6. The Ordinances of the Church: We practice Water Baptism and Holy Communion.

  7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit: Available to all believers today.

  8. The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit: Speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.

  9. Sanctification: Growing in holiness daily.

  10. The Church and Its Mission: To worship God and reach the world.

  11. The Ministry: God calls leaders to serve and equip the church.

  12. Divine Healing: We believe God still heals the sick today.

  13. The Blessed Hope: Jesus is coming back for His people.

  14. The Millennial Reign of Christ: A future time of peace on earth.

  15. The Final Judgment: Everyone will stand before God.

  16. The New Heavens and the New Earth: Our eternal home with God.

The Four Cardinal Doctrines

While all sixteen truths are vital, there are four "Cardinal Doctrines" that serve as the pillars of our identity. If you are new to FA Memphis or Boundless, these four areas are where you will see the most focus in our teaching:

  • Salvation: This is the starting point. We believe that no matter your past, God’s grace is sufficient to forgive and restore you.

  • Baptism in the Holy Spirit: We aren't meant to live the Christian life in our own strength. We believe the Holy Spirit empowers us for a vibrant, effective life.

  • Divine Healing: We take God at His Word. We pray for the sick with the expectation that God’s power is still at work.

  • The Second Coming: We live with hope. We know that this world isn't all there is, and Jesus is coming back.

Rooted in Memphis, Reaching the World

First Assembly Memphis has a deep history in the 901. We aren't just a building in Cordova; we are a community of families, students, and leaders who love our city. Being an Assemblies of God church in Memphis means we carry the "Spirit-filled" DNA into every neighborhood, from Bartlett to Arlington, Germantown to Millington.

But our mission doesn't stop at the city limits. We realize that many people are looking for a Spirit-led community but don't live in Tennessee. This is why we created Boundless Online Church. Whether you are homebound, traveling, or live in a place where a healthy local church is hard to find, Boundless provides the same biblical depth and Pentecostal fire in a digital space.

Practical Takeaways for Beginners

If you are just starting your journey with us, here are a few simple ways to engage:

  3. Find Community: Whether it's a Life Group in Memphis or a digital small group through Boundless, don't walk alone.

  4. Experience Worship: Join us on a Sunday morning. You’ll find a mix of modern worship and timeless biblical truth.

Why Pentecostal Faith Matters Today

In a world that often feels divided and noisy, the Pentecostal tradition offers something distinct: a lived experience with God. We don't just talk about God as a historical figure; we encounter Him as a present Help. The "fire" of Pentecost isn't about emotionalism, it’s about the transformation of the heart and the courage to serve our neighbors.

Whether we are serving the homeless in downtown Memphis or praying with someone via a chat room on the other side of the ocean, we do so under the conviction that the Holy Spirit is moving.

Taking Your Next Step

Do you have more questions about the Holy Spirit, baptism, or how to follow Jesus? You aren't alone. Every Sunday, we gather to explore these truths together.

Are you ready to see what God has for your life?
