In Malachi 3:3, the Bible says of the Lord: “He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver.”
Think about a silversmith here in Tennessee or anywhere skilled craftsmen work. A refiner doesn't throw metal into the fire to get rid of it. He throws it in to get the "dross", the impurities, to rise to the surface. When the heat goes up, the junk comes out.

It’s uncomfortable, and it might even hurt, but the Refiner is sitting right there. He hasn't left the room. There is a famous story in the book of Daniel, chapter 3. Three young men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, refused to bow down to a golden idol. Because of their "no bowing down" stance, they were thrown into a literal fiery furnace.
The king looked in and was shocked. He didn't just see three men; he saw four. And the fourth, he said, looked like a "son of the gods."
