Daily Parent Devotional: Leading Your Child to Jesus (March 12)

There is a common misconception among parents that leading a child to Jesus requires a perfectly orchestrated moment. We often imagine a quiet, dimly lit room, a leather-bound Bible open to just the right page, and a child who is sitting perfectly still and hanging on our every word. In reality, most of the significant spiritual breakthroughs in a child’s life happen in the middle of the mess. They happen while you are scraping burnt toast off a pan, while you are sitting in the school pickup line, or while you are trying to find a matching pair of socks five minutes after you should have left the house. If you are waiting for the perfect moment to talk to your kids about the Lord, you might be waiting a long time. The truth is that the small, mundane moments of your daily life are the primary classroom for your child’s faith.
In the Gospel of Matthew, we see a beautiful scene where people were bringing their little children to Jesus. The disciples, likely thinking they were doing Jesus a favor by protecting His schedule, tried to shoo them away. They probably thought Jesus had more important things to do than deal with sticky hands and short attention spans. But Jesus corrected them immediately. He said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." This is a foundational truth for every parent to grab hold of today. Jesus isn't just willing to meet with your children; He is actively inviting them. He sees the value in their simple, honest faith, and He wants you to be the one who facilitates that introduction. You don't need a theology degree to lead your child to the Savior. You just need a heart that is willing to point them in His direction.

When we look at the Old Testament, specifically in Deuteronomy chapter six, God gives a very clear rhythm for how faith is passed from one generation to the next. He tells parents to talk about His commandments when they sit in their houses, when they walk along the road, when they lie down, and when they get up. This is what we call "along the way" discipleship. It suggests that faith isn't something we just do on Sunday mornings for an hour. It is a constant, integrated part of our lives. If you are a shift worker or someone who struggles to attend a traditional church building because of your schedule or physical location, this should be incredibly encouraging. Your home is a sanctuary. Whether you are connecting with us through Boundless Online Church or reading a Bible story before a late-night shift, you are doing the work of the ministry within your own family.
Leading your child to Jesus is about consistently showing them that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. In John 14:6, Jesus makes it clear that no one comes to the Father except through Him. As parents, our job is to make that "Way" look like the most beautiful and necessary path they could ever take. This happens when they see how Jesus changes your own attitude after a hard day at work. It happens when they hear you pray for a neighbor who is struggling. It happens when you ask for their forgiveness after you’ve lost your temper. These small acts of humility and faith prove to your children that Jesus isn't just a character in a book, but a living Savior who is active in your family's life. If you want to dive deeper into how to live out this word daily, you might find our Boundless Daily study helpful in keeping your own spirit fed.

We often feel a lot of pressure to have all the answers. You might worry that your child will ask a question about God that you can't answer, or that you’ll say the wrong thing and somehow "mess up" their spiritual journey. But you have to remember that the Holy Spirit is the one who does the heavy lifting. Your responsibility is to be the witness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who convicts and draws hearts. If your child asks a question you don't know the answer to, it is perfectly okay to say, "I’m not sure about that, but let’s look in the Bible and see what we can find together." This actually models a very healthy faith for them. It shows them that we are all students of the Word and that it is okay to have questions. You are not just a teacher; you are a fellow traveler on the road to knowing Christ better.
In our modern world, leading your child to Jesus also means being mindful of the digital spaces they inhabit. We live in an age where children are bombarded with messages from every direction. This is why we focus so much on digital safety and using technology as a tool for the Great Commission rather than a distraction from it. By guiding their online interactions and choosing resources that point them toward biblical truth, you are protecting the soil of their hearts so the seed of the Gospel can grow. Whether you are using our YouTube worship services or simply talking about a verse you read on your phone, you are teaching them that God is relevant in every part of their world, including the digital one.

Consistency is far more important than intensity. You don't need to hold a forty-minute sermon in your living room every night. In fact, for most children, that might be counterproductive. Instead, aim for two-minute "God-moments" throughout the day. When you see a beautiful sunset, take ten seconds to thank God for His creativity. When your child is afraid of a storm, pray a simple prayer asking for God’s peace. When they make a mistake, talk to them about grace and how Jesus forgives us. These tiny deposits of truth add up over time to create a massive wealth of faith. You are building a foundation, brick by brick, and every small conversation is a vital part of that structure.
It is also important to remember that every child is an individual with their own unique timeline. Some children are ready to make a decision for Christ at a very young age, while others may take more time to process and ask questions. Your role is not to force a decision, but to create an environment where a decision for Jesus is the most natural next step. We believe in the power of the Holy Spirit to transform lives, and that includes the lives of our little ones. Keep praying for them, keep showing them the love of Christ, and keep bringing them to the feet of Jesus. God loves your children even more than you do, and He is faithful to complete the work He begins in them.

If you are feeling overwhelmed today, take a deep breath. You don't have to be a perfect parent to lead your child to a perfect Savior. In fact, your weaknesses can often be the very things that point them toward God’s strength. When they see you leaning on Him, they learn that they can lean on Him too. Your home is the primary mission field, and you are the best person for this assignment because God chose you to be their parent. Trust that He will give you the words to say and the wisdom to know when to say them. The small moments really do matter, and God is using every single one of them to draw your child closer to Him.
As you go through your day today, look for one small opportunity to mention the goodness of God to your child. It doesn't have to be profound. It just has to be honest. Maybe it's while you're driving them to practice or while you're tucking them in at night. Just share a little bit of what Jesus means to you. Those small seeds of faith may seem insignificant now, but they are the beginning of a lifelong journey of walking with the Lord. We are here to support you in that journey, providing a community for those who might not have a local church home or who need the flexibility of an online spiritual family. You are not doing this alone.
