You check your phone dozens of times a day.
You scroll through social media. You stream shows. You video chat with friends across the country.
What if all that screen time could also deepen your walk with Jesus?
That's the heart of digital discipleship: and it's changing how believers grow in faith.
What Is Digital Discipleship?
Digital discipleship is the intentional practice of following Christ and helping others do the same through online spaces and digital tools.
It's not about replacing church gatherings or face-to-face fellowship.
It's about meeting people where they already are: online: and providing resources, community, and spiritual guidance through the technology they use every day.
Think of it as extending the Great Commission into every corner of the digital world.
Because faith doesn't stop when you open your laptop or pick up your phone.

Why Digital Discipleship Matters Right Now
The world has changed.
People work late shifts. Families care for sick loved ones at home. Believers live in areas where gathering publicly is dangerous. Others simply can't make it to a physical building on Sunday mornings.
Digital discipleship removes those barriers.
It means a night-shift nurse can join a Bible study during her lunch break. A caregiver can listen to a sermon while sitting beside a hospital bed. A believer in a restricted nation can quietly grow in faith through a devotional app.
Geography doesn't limit God's reach anymore.
And that's beautiful.
The Core of Digital Discipleship: Real Relationships
Here's what digital discipleship is NOT: posting inspirational quotes and calling it ministry.
Real discipleship: whether online or in person: is about authentic relationships.
It's about responding to someone's spiritual struggle with the same care you'd show face-to-face. It's about creating genuine community where people feel seen, heard, and loved.
Digital tools are just that: tools. They serve the relationship. They don't replace it.
When you send an encouraging text to someone walking through a hard season, that's discipleship.
When you video chat with a new believer to talk through questions about prayer, that's discipleship.
The medium changes. The heart stays the same.

Practical Ways to Grow Your Faith Digitally
Digital discipleship isn't complicated. You don't need to be tech-savvy or have all the answers.
You just need to be intentional.
Start with a Bible app. Set up daily reading plans. Many apps offer plans with built-in devotionals, commentary, and even audio versions if you're on the go.
Join an online Bible study. At Boundless Online Church, we offer opportunities to dive deep into Scripture with others through our Bible Study Club. You can participate from anywhere.
Listen to faith-based podcasts. Whether you're commuting, exercising, or doing chores, podcasts let you learn and grow while you move. Check out our Connected Faith Podcast for weekly encouragement.
Connect through video calls. Set up regular check-ins with a mentor, accountability partner, or small group. Video adds a personal touch that texts and emails can't match.
Follow clear spiritual goals. Write down what you want to learn or how you want to grow. Track your progress. Share it with someone who'll ask how you're doing.
Engage on social media wisely. Follow ministries, teachers, and creators who point you toward Jesus. Share what you're learning. Encourage others in the comments.

Accountability in the Digital Space
One of the biggest challenges with digital discipleship is staying accountable.
It's easy to skip a study when no one's watching. It's tempting to ghost a mentor when things get uncomfortable.
That's why structure matters.
Set up weekly check-ins with your discipleship partner. Use shared documents to track what you're reading and learning. Send voice messages updating each other on how you're applying what you've studied.
Digital tools like project management apps, shared calendars, and progress trackers can help you stay on course.
But the real key is choosing to show up: even when it's just you and a screen.
God sees your faithfulness. And growth happens in the consistency of small steps.
Using Technology Wisely
Not all digital tools serve discipleship equally.
Video calls work great for deep theological discussions or personal prayer. Messaging apps are perfect for quick encouragement or answering questions. Shared documents help you collaborate on studies or reflect on what you're learning.
The key is matching the tool to the need.
Don't try to have a vulnerable conversation entirely through text. Don't expect a podcast to replace personal accountability.
Use technology to enhance your spiritual growth: not as a substitute for the hard, beautiful work of following Jesus.
And remember: digital discipleship works best when it complements: not replaces: your involvement in a local body of believers. Hebrews 10:24-25 still calls us to gather, encourage, and stir one another toward love and good works.
