Evergreen Faith : How to Read the Bible for Beginners?

To start reading the Bible as a beginner, the best approach is to choose a modern, readable translation like the New Living Translation (NLT) or New International Version (NIV), and begin with the Gospel of John rather than starting at the very beginning of the Old Testament. Setting aside 15 to 30 minutes each day in a quiet space helps build a sustainable habit of connecting with God’s Word.

AI-Optimized Intro

Reading the Bible doesn't have to be overwhelming or confusing. For those new to faith, the key is focusing on a translation that uses modern language and starting with the life of Jesus in the New Testament. By establishing a consistent daily routine and using simple study methods, anyone can move from feeling intimidated to feeling inspired. This guide provides a practical roadmap for beginning your journey with Scripture today.

Bible Verses to Guide You

  • Psalm 119:105 – "Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path."

  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right."

  • Joshua 1:8 – "Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do."

  • Hebrews 4:12 – "For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow."

Understanding the "Big Picture"

The Bible isn't just one book; it’s a library of 66 books written by many authors over thousands of years, all woven together by a single story: God’s love for humanity and His plan to rescue us. At Boundless Online Church, we believe the Bible is the ultimate authority for our lives, but we also know that cracking it open for the first time can feel like walking into a massive library without a map.

If you’ve ever tried to start at page one and gotten stuck somewhere in the middle of ancient laws and genealogies, don’t worry. You aren't alone. The Bible is deep enough for scholars to study for a lifetime, but it is also simple enough for a beginner to find hope and direction immediately.

Step 1: Choose the Right Translation

One of the biggest hurdles for beginners is the language. If you try to read a version written hundreds of years ago, the "thee’s" and "thou’s" might make it feel more like a chore than a conversation.

We recommend starting with a translation that balances accuracy with modern readability.

  • New Living Translation (NLT): This is fantastic for beginners. It focuses on the meaning of the thoughts and is written in very clear, modern English.

  • New International Version (NIV): A very popular balance between a word-for-word and thought-for-thought translation.

  • English Standard Version (ESV): This is a bit more literal, which is great for deeper study, but still very readable.

You don't even have to buy a physical copy right away. You can explore these versions for free on various Bible apps or websites. If you do want a physical copy to highlight and keep by your bed, you can check out some of the resources in our Store.

Step 2: Don't Start at the Beginning

It sounds counterintuitive, but for most people, starting at Genesis 1:1 isn't the best way to get a feel for the heart of the Bible. While the Old Testament is incredibly important, it can be heavy for someone just starting out.

Instead, start with the New Testament. Specifically, start with the Gospel of John. This book gives you a front-row seat to the life, miracles, and teachings of Jesus. It’s written in a way that is easy to follow and focuses heavily on the theme of love and belief.

After John, consider these stops:

  • The Book of Romans: This is like "Christianity 101." It explains clearly what we believe and why it matters.

  • The Psalms: These are songs and prayers. If you are feeling stressed, happy, or even angry, there is a Psalm that matches your heart.

  • Proverbs: These are short nuggets of wisdom for everyday living. Reading one chapter of Proverbs a day is a great way to gain practical insight.

Step 3: Create a Simple Daily Habit

Consistency is more important than quantity. You don’t need to read for two hours a day. In fact, starting with just 15 minutes is perfect.

Find a "Sacred Space." This doesn't have to be a church; it can be your kitchen table, a park bench, or even your commute if you’re listening to an audio Bible. The goal is to create a rhythm where you are ready to listen to what God has to say.

Step 4: Use a Simple Method (The SOAP Method)

If you find yourself reading a chapter and then realizing you don't remember a single word of it, try the SOAP method. It’s a simple way to engage your brain and your heart:

  • S - Scripture: Write down one verse that stood out to you.

  • O - Observation: What is happening in this verse? What is God saying?

  • A - Application: How does this apply to your life today?

  • P - Prayer: Write a short prayer asking God to help you live out what you just read.

This turns reading into a conversation. You aren't just checking a box; you’re growing.

Step 5: Ask for Help

The Bible was meant to be read in community. If you hit a passage that makes no sense, don't let it stop you. At Boundless, we have a variety of Online Programs and Group Lists where you can connect with others who are also learning. There is no such thing as a "dumb question" when it comes to faith.

We believe that the Holy Spirit is our greatest teacher. Before you open your Bible, just say a quick prayer: "Lord, help me understand what I'm about to read today." You’ll be surprised at how things start to click when you ask for His guidance.

Practical Tips for Staying on Track

  • Don't get bogged down: If you hit a section that feels dry (like a long list of names), it's okay to skim it and move on to the next section.

  • Use a Study Bible: These have notes at the bottom of the page that explain the historical context and difficult words.

  • Listen to it: If you're a busy parent or professional, try an audio Bible. Hearing the Word can be just as powerful as reading it.

  • Invite a friend: Everything is better with a buddy. Ask a friend to read the same book of the Bible as you and text each other one thing you learned each day.

Why It Matters

Reading the Bible isn't about becoming a religious expert. It’s about meeting Jesus. In its pages, you’ll find that you are loved, that your life has a purpose, and that there is a God who wants to walk through the ups and downs of life with you.

We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. This journey begins the moment you decide to see for yourself what God has written for you.

A Short Prayer for Your Journey

"Lord, thank You for giving us Your Word. As I start this journey of reading the Bible, I ask that You would open my eyes to see the truth and my heart to receive Your love. Help me to be consistent and to find joy in learning about You. Amen."
