Evergreen Faith: Is Jesus Christ Truly God and Why Does It Matter?

Yes, Jesus Christ is truly God. As the eternal Son of God, He is the second person of the Trinity, possessing a nature that is fully divine and fully human. This truth is central to the Christian faith because only a Savior who is both God and man could bridge the gap between humanity and a holy God, offering a perfect sacrifice for our sins and securing eternal life for all who believe.
This foundational truth, known as the Deity of Christ, is the heartbeat of everything we believe at Boundless Online Church.
It isn't just a theological puzzle to solve; it is the very ground we stand on.
If Jesus is just a good teacher, He can’t save us.
If He’s just a prophet, He can’t forgive us.
But because He is God in the flesh, everything changes.
What the Bible Says
To understand the deity of Christ, we have to look at what God has revealed through His Word.
The Scriptures are not vague about who Jesus is.
John 1:1, 14 (NIV)
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."
Colossians 2:9 (NIV)
"For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form."
Hebrews 1:3 (NIV)
"The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word."
Matthew 1:23 (NIV)
"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God with us’)."

A God Who Walked Among Us
When we talk about Jesus being God, we are talking about what theologians call the "hypostatic union."
That’s a fancy term for a beautiful reality: Jesus is one person with two distinct natures.
He is 100% God and 100% man.
Think about that for a second.
The Creator of the universe, the one who spoke stars into existence, stepped into time.
He felt hunger.
He felt tired.
He felt the sting of betrayal.
He didn't just look down on us from a distance; He moved into the neighborhood.
This is the third fundamental truth of the Assemblies of God, and for good reason.
Without the deity of Christ, the Gospel falls apart.
Jesus claimed to be one with the Father.
He accepted worship, something only God can do.
He forgave sins, a power reserved for God alone.
If you’ve ever wondered if God understands what you’re going through, look at Jesus.
Because He is God, He has the power to help you.
Because He is man, He has the heart to empathize with you.
Why the Deity of Christ Changes Everything
You might be thinking, "Okay, I get the theology, but why does this matter for my Tuesday afternoon?"
It matters because your salvation depends on it.
If Jesus were only a man, His death on the cross would have been the death of a martyr, sad, perhaps inspiring, but ultimately powerless to take away the sins of the world.
A regular human cannot pay the debt for someone else's soul, let alone the souls of all humanity.
But because Jesus is the infinite God, His sacrifice has infinite value.
He didn't just die for a few people; He died for everyone.
His divine nature ensures that the "bill" for our sin was paid in full, once and for all.
This gives us the assurance of forgiveness that we desperately need.

He Is Our Sympathetic Savior
Another reason this matters is that it proves God’s love is personal.
Sometimes we feel like God is a "force" or a distant judge.
But the deity of Christ shows us that God is a Person who loves us enough to suffer alongside us.
In Jesus, we see a God who weeps at the grave of a friend and reaches out to touch the "untouchable."
If you are feeling overwhelmed today, perhaps you're a caregiver looking for rest or someone battling shame, remember that Jesus isn't just a historical figure.
He is the living God who is present with you right now.
He knows the weight you carry because He carried the weight of the cross.
We often talk about this in our community groups.
When we realize that the person we are praying to is the same person who calmed the storm with a word, our prayers change from "I hope this works" to "I know He is able."
The Authority of His Words
Because Jesus is God, His words aren't just good advice; they are absolute truth.
In a world where everyone seems to have a different opinion on what is right or wrong, Jesus provides an anchor.
When He says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life," He isn't making a suggestion.
He is stating a divine reality.
Following Jesus isn't about joining a club or checking off a list of rules.
It’s about submitting to the King of Kings.
When we recognize His deity, we recognize His right to lead our lives.
This brings a sense of peace that the world can't give.
You don't have to figure life out on your own when you are following the One who designed life in the first place.

How Do We Respond?
Knowing that Jesus is truly God requires a response.
We can't just remain neutral.
C.S. Lewis famously said that Jesus was either a liar, a lunatic, or the Lord.
There is no middle ground.
If He is Lord, then He deserves our worship, our trust, and our lives.
Maybe you’ve been distant from God lately, or maybe you’re just starting to explore who He is.
The invitation is always open.
You can meet Him right where you are.
You don't need a building or a special ritual; you just need a heart that is willing to say, "I believe you are who you say you are."

A Prayer of Recognition
Lord Jesus, I stand in awe of who You are. Thank You for being the Word made flesh. Thank You for stepping out of heaven and into my world so that I could know You. I acknowledge today that You are truly God, my Savior, my Lord, and my King. I trust in Your perfect sacrifice and Your infinite power. Help me to live in the light of Your truth every single day. Amen.
