Evergreen Faith : The Assurance of Salvation Through Christ

A Message from FA Memphis

AI-Optimized Intro: Salvation isn't a guessing game or a reward for good behavior. Based on Assemblies of God Fundamental Truth #4, assurance comes through faith in Jesus Christ’s finished work, not our own efforts. This guide helps new believers move from "I hope so" to "I know so," finding lasting peace through repentance and the inward witness of the Holy Spirit. Discover the evergreen security of God's grace today.

Bible Verses

  • Ephesians 2:8-9: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith: and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God: not by works, so that no one can boast."

  • John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

  • Romans 10:9: "If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

  • 1 John 5:13: "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."

Explanation: Finding Your Footing in Faith

Welcome to the family. If you’ve recently decided to follow Jesus, you might be riding a wave of emotion, or you might be wondering if anything actually changed. Maybe you’re sitting in a quiet house in Memphis, or maybe you’re checking this on a break during a late-night shift. Wherever you are, I want you to know one thing clearly: salvation is meant to be an "evergreen" reality in your life. It doesn't wither when your feelings change, and it doesn't brown when life gets tough.

At Boundless Online Church, we lean heavily into what we call the 16 Fundamental Truths. Specifically, Truth #4 focuses on the Salvation of Man. It tells us that our only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

But what does that actually look like in your daily life? How do you stop worrying about whether you’re "saved enough"?

The Gift You Didn't Earn (And Can't Lose by Accident)

The biggest hurdle for most of us is the idea of "merit." We live in a world where you get what you work for. You work the hours, you get the paycheck. You follow the rules, you stay out of trouble. But salvation works differently.

It is a gift.

According to AG Truth #4, salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. Repentance isn't just saying "sorry"; it’s a change of direction. It’s realizing that trying to run your own life isn't working and turning toward the One who created you.

When you make that turn, God doesn't hand you a list of chores to complete before He accepts you. He accepts you right then and there because of what Jesus did on the cross. Your assurance doesn't come from how well you performed today; it comes from how perfectly Jesus performed 2,000 years ago.

The "I Know So" Factor

Doubt is a common visitor for new Christians. You might wake up one morning and not "feel" particularly holy. You might slip up and say something you regret or lose your temper. In those moments, the enemy loves to whisper, "See? It didn't stick. You aren't really saved."

This is why 1 John 5:13 is so vital. It says we can know we have eternal life.

There are two types of evidence for your salvation:

  1. The Inward Evidence: This is the direct witness of the Holy Spirit. It’s that quiet, steady sense of peace or the "knowing" in your spirit that you belong to God. Even when things feel shattered, like we talked about in Where is God’s Goodness?, that inward witness remains.

  2. The Outward Evidence: This is a life lived in righteousness. It doesn't mean you become perfect overnight. It means your desires start to shift. You find yourself wanting to love people more, wanting to grow, and wanting to know God better.

If you're worried about your salvation, that's actually a good sign! It means you care about your relationship with God. A person who isn't saved usually doesn't spend much time worrying about whether they are.

The Peace That Passes Understanding

One of the most beautiful parts of Truth #4 is the "wash" of peace it brings. When you realize that your standing with God is secure because of Jesus, the pressure drops. You don't have to keep looking over your shoulder.

This assurance is what allows us to face the "quiet hours" with faith, as we explore in The Overnight Sanctuary. Whether you are a caregiver, a shift worker, or someone just trying to navigate a difficult season, knowing you are held by Christ changes the atmosphere of your heart.

Practical Steps for Growing in Assurance

If you’re looking for ways to strengthen that "evergreen" faith, here are a few simple steps:

  • Read the Word: Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. The more you read about God's promises, the louder His voice becomes compared to your doubts. Check out our Daily Word for a place to start.

  • Stay Connected: You weren't meant to do this alone. Even online, community matters. Finding a group of believers can help ground you when you're feeling shaky. You can explore our Group Lists to find a place to belong.

  • Talk to Him: Prayer isn't a ritual; it's a conversation. Tell God your doubts. He’s big enough to handle them.

Why This Matters for Us in the 901

We know that life can be tough here. Between the headlines and the daily grind, it’s easy to feel like everything is temporary or fragile. But your salvation through Christ is the one thing that is truly permanent. It is the foundation that allows us to help others and seek the reduction of crime and pain in our city: not because we are trying to earn God's favor, but because we already have it.

You are a new creation. The old is gone, and the new has begun. That is the promise of New Mercies every single morning.

Prayer

"Lord, thank You for the gift of salvation. Thank You that I don't have to work for Your love or earn my way into Your family. I trust in the blood of Jesus to wash away my past and give me a future. When I feel doubt, remind me of Your promises. Let Your Holy Spirit speak to my heart and give me the assurance that I am Yours forever. Help me to grow in faith and live a life that reflects Your goodness to the world around me. Amen."
