Evergreen Faith : The Creation of Man

A Message from FA Memphis

The Creation of Man is the fourth Fundamental Truth of the Assemblies of God, affirming that humanity was divinely created in the image of God. While originally good and upright, man fell into sin through voluntary transgression, resulting in spiritual and physical death. Understanding our origin and our fall is essential for recognizing our need for Jesus Christ and our true identity as children of God.

Bible Verses

Genesis 1:26-27 (NIV) "Then God said, 'Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.' So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."

Genesis 2:7 (NIV) "Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."

Romans 5:12 (NIV) "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned."

Psalm 139:13-14 (NIV) "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

Explanation: Our Origin and Our Need

Have you ever looked in the mirror and wondered, “Why am I here?” or “Does my life actually have a purpose?” These are the big questions that keep us up at night. At Boundless Online Church, we believe the answers start at the very beginning of the story. In our series on the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, Truth #4 focuses on the Creation of Man.

It’s a foundational belief that changes how we see ourselves, how we treat others, and why we need Jesus. Dr. Layne McDonald, Online and Connection Pastor at Boundless Online Church, often reminds us that knowing where we came from is the first step in knowing where we are going.

1. The Divine Blueprint: The Image of God

The first thing to understand about the creation of man is that you were not an accident. You aren’t the product of random biological chances. According to Genesis, God took a personal interest in creating humanity. He didn’t just "speak" us into existence like He did the stars or the trees; He "formed" us.

The Bible uses the term Imago Dei, which means we are made in the "Image of God." This doesn't mean we look like God physically, but rather that we share certain attributes with Him. We have the ability to reason, to create, to love, and to have a moral conscience. This gives every single human being, regardless of their background, ability, or status, an inherent dignity and worth.

When you feel like you don’t measure up to the world's standards, remember Truth #4. You were designed by the Creator of the Universe to reflect His glory. That is your baseline. That is your value.

2. The Original Goodness

When God finished creating mankind, He looked at everything He had made and declared it "very good." We were created for a perfect relationship with God. There was no shame, no fear, and no separation. Man was designed to be a steward of the earth, walking in daily fellowship with the Father.

This is important because it tells us what "normal" was supposed to look like. We often feel a sense of longing for something "more" or a feeling that "things shouldn't be this way." That’s because our souls remember the original design of peace and connection.

3. The Great Disruption: The Fall

If we were created "very good," why is the world so messy? Why is there hate, sickness, and loneliness? Truth #4 also addresses the "Fall of Man."

God gave us a choice. Love isn't real if it isn't chosen. Unfortunately, through voluntary transgression, a fancy way of saying we chose our own way over God's way, humanity fell. Adam and Eve's choice in the Garden of Eden introduced sin into the human experience.

This sin didn't just break a rule; it broke a relationship. It brought about spiritual death (separation from God) and physical death. This is why we feel that "gap" in our hearts. We are like mirrors that have been dropped; we still reflect God's image, but the reflection is cracked and distorted.

4. The Practical Impact on Your Life Today

You might wonder, “What does a creation story from thousands of years ago have to do with my life in 2026?” Actually, it has everything to do with it.

First, it defines your Identity. In a world that tries to tell you who you are based on your job, your social media following, or your mistakes, Truth #4 says you are a divine creation. You don't have to "find yourself" because you were already "made" by Someone who loves you.

Second, it defines your Purpose. If you were made by God, you were made for God. Your life has a mission that goes beyond just surviving. You are here to represent Him to the world around you. This is why we are so passionate about our Bible Study Club; it’s where we learn how to live out that purpose.

Third, it explains our Need for a Savior. Because we are all part of a "fallen" race, we can't bridge the gap back to God on our own. We can't "good work" our way out of spiritual death. This realization is what points us directly toward Jesus Christ. He is the "Second Adam" who came to undo the damage of the first fall.

5. Hope for the Late-Night Seekers

We know many of our community members are joining us at odd hours, maybe you're working a night shift, or you're a caregiver who finally has a quiet moment at 3:00 AM. If you’ve been feeling like a "broken mirror," please know that the Story doesn't end with the Fall.

God’s heart for His creation never changed. Even after the fall, He began a rescue mission to bring us back. You are still fearfully and wonderfully made. Your "cracks" don't disqualify you from His love; they are the places where His grace can shine through most clearly.

If you’re struggling with questions about faith or identity, you aren't alone. We have resources to help you explore these deep topics, like our post on 7 Life Questions Everyone's Afraid to Ask.

A Prayer for You

Heavenly Father, I thank You that I am not an accident. Thank You for creating me in Your image and for giving my life inherent value. I acknowledge that I have fallen short and that sin has affected my life and my world. I ask that You would help me see myself the way You see me: as a cherished creation in need of Your grace. Restore the reflection of Your character in my heart today. Amen.
