Evergreen Faith : Understanding the Grace of God: It's More Than You Think

Grace is God’s unmerited favor, the undeserved goodness and forgiveness freely given to us through Jesus Christ. It is not a reward for good behavior, but a gift based entirely on God’s character. Beyond just saving us from sin, grace is the active, transforming power that sustains us daily, provides direct access to God, and empowers us to live a life of purpose and peace.

Relevant Bible Verses

  • Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV): "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast."

  • Exodus 34:6 (NLT): "The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, 'Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.'"

  • Romans 5:8 (NIV): "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

  • Titus 2:11-12 (NLT): "For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God."

  • Hebrews 4:16 (KJV): "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."

Pastoral Insight: What Grace Really Means

When we talk about the "Grace of God," it’s easy to let the word become just another "churchy" term that we nod our heads at without really feeling its weight. We often hear it defined as "unmerited favor," which is 100% true, but there is so much more beneath the surface. As your Online and Connection Pastor here at Boundless Online Church, I want to take a moment to pull back the curtain on just how deep and wide this grace really is.

In our world, almost everything is transactional. You work a certain number of hours, and you get a paycheck. You treat someone well, and you expect to be treated well in return. We are conditioned to believe that we get what we deserve. But God’s economy works differently. Grace is the ultimate "anti-transaction." It is God giving us the exact opposite of what we deserve.

The Three Pillars: Justice, Mercy, and Grace

To understand grace, we have to look at it alongside justice and mercy.

  • Justice is getting what you deserve (punishment for a mistake).

  • Mercy is not getting what you deserve (the punishment is withheld).

  • Grace is getting what you don’t deserve (unlimited favor, love, and eternal life).

Think of it like this: If you get pulled over for speeding, justice is getting the ticket. Mercy is the officer giving you a warning and letting you go. Grace is the officer giving you a warning, then taking you out for a steak dinner and paying for your car's next three months of fuel.

That is the heart of our Father. He doesn’t just stop at "not punishing" us; He goes the extra mile to shower us with blessings, adoption into His family, and a seat at His table.

Grace as God’s Nature (The "Memphis Scrub" Context)

In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for grace is khen. It describes a superior showing favor to an inferior, but with a twist: the superior does it because they find delight in the person. When God revealed Himself to Moses in Exodus 34, the very first things He mentioned were His compassion and His grace.

This means grace isn't just something God does; it is who He is. He sees you as a treasure. He delights in you. Even when we wander or make a mess of things, His nature doesn't change. He doesn't revoke His grace because you had a bad Tuesday. It is consistent, enduring, and steadfast.

At Boundless Online Church, we talk a lot about "meeting Jesus where you are." That’s only possible because of grace. You don’t have to clean yourself up to come to Him; the grace is what does the cleaning once you arrive.

Grace is Active Power, Not Passive Permission

One of the biggest misconceptions about grace is that it’s a "license to sin." Some people think, "Well, if God’s grace covers everything, it doesn't matter how I live." But if we look at Titus 2:11-12, we see that grace is actually a teacher. It "trains" us to turn away from things that hurt us and others.

Grace is active power. It’s the fuel in the engine of your spiritual life. Paul, who wrote much of the New Testament, said that everything he accomplished was "not I, but the grace of God that was with me" (1 Corinthians 15:10).

When you feel like you can't forgive that person who hurt you, grace is the power that helps you do it. When you feel like you aren't strong enough to overcome an addiction or a habit, grace is the strength that carries you through. It is God's enabling power working in you to do what you could never do on your own.

Access to the Throne

Finally, grace gives us a VIP pass. Before Christ, the idea of approaching a holy God was terrifying. But because of what Jesus did on the cross, the "veil was torn." Hebrews 4:16 tells us we can now "come boldly" to the throne of grace.

You don't have to wait in line. You don't have to use fancy words. You don't have to wonder if He’s in a good mood. Because of grace, you are welcomed as a beloved child. Whether you are at home, on your lunch break, or scrolling through your phone late at night, you have immediate access to the Creator of the universe.

We see this played out every day in our Bible Study Club. People from all walks of life come together, not because they have it all figured out, but because they are all leaning on the same grace.

A Prayer for You

Father, I thank You for the gift of Your grace. I thank You that I don’t have to earn Your love and that I can’t lose it by my own failures. I ask that You would help the person reading this right now to truly feel the weight of Your favor. If they are feeling unworthy, remind them that Your grace is bigger than their mistakes. Empower them today with Your strength to live a life that reflects Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
