The 'Blessed Hope' is the imminent, bodily return of Jesus Christ for His believers, often referred to as the Rapture. Rooted in Titus 2:13 and Assemblies of God Fundamental Truth #13, this doctrine provides Christians with the confident assurance that Christ will return at any moment to resurrect deceased believers and transform the living, offering eternal encouragement and a call to holy living in the present age.
Bible Verses
Titus 2:13 "...looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ."
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 "For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord."
1 Corinthians 15:51-52 "Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed: in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."
Romans 8:23 "Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body."
Pastoral Insight and Practical Encouragement
When we talk about the "Blessed Hope," it can sometimes feel like we’re discussing a scene from a big-budget sci-fi movie. There are trumpets, clouds, and people disappearing in the "twinkling of an eye." But for us at Boundless Online Church, this isn't just a theological theory or a plot point for a novel. It is a cornerstone of our faith.
The term "hope" in our modern world is often a bit flimsy. We say things like, "I hope it doesn't rain today," or "I hope my team wins the game." In those contexts, hope is just a wish. It’s a desire for something that might or might not happen. But the biblical definition of hope: specifically the Blessed Hope: is entirely different. The Greek word used is elpis, which means a confident, joyful expectation. It’s not a "maybe"; it’s a "definitely."
What Makes the Hope "Blessed"?
The word "blessed" (makarios) suggests a state of being happy or fortunate. Why are we fortunate? Because we aren't left to wander through a broken world without a finish line. The Blessed Hope tells us that Jesus is coming back.
This isn't just a "Second Coming" in a general sense; it refers specifically to what many call the Rapture. According to the Assemblies of God Fundamental Truth #13, we believe in the "blessed hope": the resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord. This is the impending and imminent return of our Savior.

The Power of Imminence
One of the most vital parts of this doctrine is the word imminent. This means that it could happen at any moment. There are no biblical signs that must be fulfilled before Jesus calls His Church home. He could return before you finish reading this blog post.
Now, some might find that scary, but for the believer, it’s the ultimate comfort. It means that our current struggles, our physical pains, and the chaos we see in the news are not the end of the story. If you’ve ever found yourself asking, “Where is God when it hurts?”, the Blessed Hope is part of the answer. It’s the promise that God has a specific plan to rescue His people and set all things right.
Knowing that He could return today changes how we live. It gives us a sense of "calm power." We don't have to live in fear of the future because the future belongs to Him.
A Reunion and a Transformation
The Blessed Hope is also deeply personal. Paul tells us in 1 Thessalonians that when the trumpet sounds, the "dead in Christ" will rise first. For anyone who has sat by the bedside of a loved one or stood at a graveside, this is the most beautiful news imaginable. It means that goodbye is only temporary.

Not only is there a reunion, but there is a transformation. Our bodies: which get tired, sick, and old: will be changed in an instant. We will receive bodies like His glorious body. This is the "redemption of our body" that Paul mentions in Romans 8. We aren't just souls floating in the clouds; we are whole persons, restored and perfected, ready to spend eternity with our Creator.
How to Live While We Wait
So, what do we do in the meantime? Do we just sit on a mountain and wait for the trumpet? Not at all. The Blessed Hope is a catalyst for action.
It Purifies Us: 1 John 3:3 says that everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself. When we realize that we might see Jesus face-to-face today, it motivates us to live with integrity and love.
It Encourages Us: Life is hard. Whether you are dealing with health issues, financial stress, or family conflict, the Blessed Hope reminds you that this season is "light and momentary" compared to the eternal weight of glory coming our way.
It Drives Our Mission: At Boundless Online Church, we are passionate about helping people meet Jesus. The imminency of His return gives us a "holy urgency." We want as many people as possible to share in this hope. This is why we produce the Boundless Podcast and offer Sunday Sermons online: to reach those who might never step foot in a traditional building.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the world, I want to encourage you to lift your eyes. The morning sky isn't just a beautiful view; it’s a reminder that one day soon, the clouds will part, and we will see Him as He is. That is our hope. And it is truly blessed.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the Blessed Hope. Thank You that we aren't waiting on a "maybe," but on the sure promise of Your return. When our hearts are heavy and the world feels dark, remind us of the trumpet's sound and the glory that awaits. Help us to live every day as if You are coming back today: with hearts full of love, hands busy with Your work, and eyes fixed on the horizon. We love You, and we wait for You. Amen.
Call to Action
