Evergreen Faith : Why is Water Baptism a Public Declaration of Your New Life?

Water baptism is a public declaration of your new life because it serves as a visible symbol of your identification with Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. By stepping into the water, you are openly demonstrating your commitment to leave your old life behind and follow Him. This sacred act, rooted in the Assemblies of God Fundamental Truth #6, transforms an internal decision into an outward testimony for the world to see.

Relevant Bible Verses

Understanding the Heart of Baptism

Have you ever had a moment in your life where everything changed? Maybe it was a wedding day, a graduation, or the day you moved to a new city. Those moments usually come with some kind of public ceremony or announcement. Why? Because when something significant happens on the inside, we want the outside world to know about it.

In the Christian walk, water baptism is that "big announcement." It’s the moment you stand up and say, "I’m with Jesus."

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that following Christ is the most exciting journey you can ever take. But it isn't meant to be a secret. Baptism is the bridge between your private faith and your public life. It’s a beautiful, cinematic representation of a spiritual reality: the old you is gone, and the new you is here.

The Symbolism: Death, Burial, and Resurrection

To understand why baptism is a "declaration of new life," we have to look at what’s actually happening when you go under the water.

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we practice baptism by immersion. This isn't just a tradition for tradition's sake; it’s deeply symbolic of the Gospel itself.

  1. Going Down into the Water: This represents the "death" of your old self. All the mistakes, the guilt, the shame, and the person you used to be are symbolically "buried" in the water.

  2. Coming Up out of the Water: This represents the "resurrection." Just as Jesus was raised from the dead by the power of the Father, you are raised to walk in a brand-new way of living.

When you come up out of that water, you are signaling to everyone watching, your family, your friends, and your church community, that you are no longer defined by your past. You are defined by Christ. If you've ever wondered about the history of this movement and how these truths became so central to our faith, you can read more about the Assemblies of God and how this worldwide movement began.

Why the "Public" Part Matters

Some people ask, "Can't I just follow Jesus in my heart? Why do I have to do this in front of people?"

While faith is a personal decision, it was never meant to be a private one. In the New Testament, we see that baptism and "going public" with faith went hand-in-hand. On the day of Pentecost, thousands of people didn't just believe quietly; they were baptized publicly.

There is power in a public declaration. It creates accountability, it encourages other believers, and it serves as a witness to those who don’t yet know Jesus. It’s like putting on a wedding ring. The ring doesn’t make you married, your commitment and legal vows do, but the ring tells the world exactly who you belong to.

Baptism is your "spiritual wedding ring." It tells the world you belong to the family of God. If you are looking for a place to belong and want to know more about our church family, check out our guide on what it means to belong to the Assemblies of God.

Identification with Christ (AG Truth #6)

At Boundless Online Church, we hold fast to the 16 Fundamental Truths. Truth #6 specifically focuses on the "Ordinances of the Church." It states that baptism by immersion is commanded in the Scriptures. All who repent and believe on Christ as Savior and Lord are to be baptized.

This isn't a "requirement" for salvation, salvation is a gift of grace through faith, but it is a requirement for obedience. Jesus Himself was baptized to "fulfill all righteousness," setting the example for us to follow. When we follow Him into the water, we are identifying with His journey. We are saying, "Where He went, I will go. What He says, I will do."

This identification gives us a new identity. You aren't just a person trying to be better; you are a "new creation" in Christ. This new identity is the foundation for everything we do, whether we are joining a Bible study for men or gathering with Wednesday night family groups.

A Message for the Memphis Community and Beyond

We know that life in Memphis and across the globe can be challenging. We see the headlines, and we feel the weight of the world. Sometimes, people ask, "Is there hope for Memphis?" or wonder "Where is God when it hurts?"

The answer to those questions is often found in the "new life" that baptism symbolizes. When individuals decide to publicly declare their faith, it brings hope to the whole community. It shows that transformation is possible. It proves that light is stronger than darkness.

Every time someone is baptized, it’s a win for the Kingdom of God. It’s one more person standing up to say that hope is real and that Jesus is the source of that hope.

Common Questions About Baptism

Does baptism save me? No. We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism is the "outward sign of an inward grace." It is an act of obedience that follows your decision to trust Jesus.

Who should be baptized? Anyone who has made a personal decision to follow Jesus Christ. If you have repented of your sins and placed your trust in Him, you are ready!

What if I was baptized as a baby? In our tradition, we believe baptism should follow a personal decision to believe. Many people who were baptized as infants choose to be baptized again as adults to personally "own" their faith and make their own public declaration.

Is it ever too late? Never. Whether you are 8 or 88, if you have found new life in Christ, it is the perfect time to declare it.

A Simple Prayer for Your Journey

"Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of new life. Thank You for sending Jesus to die for my sins and for raising Him to life so that I can have a fresh start. Lord, give me the courage to go public with my faith. Help me to not be ashamed of the Gospel, but to celebrate the transformation You are working in me. May my life be a light to others, showing them the beauty of Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen."
