Growth Series : Finding Peace in a World of Digital Noise
A Message from FA Memphis
Do you ever feel like the world is just... too loud?
It’s not just the traffic outside or the hum of the refrigerator. It’s the constant, invisible stream of data hitting our brains from the moment we wake up until the second we close our eyes. We live in an era of "digital noise", a relentless cycle of notifications, headlines, social media scrolls, and the pressure to always be "on."
If you’ve been feeling drained, anxious, or just spiritually "thin," you aren’t alone. At Boundless Online Church, we talk to people every day who feel like they are drowning in the static. But here is the good news: peace isn’t something you have to travel to a mountain top to find. It’s something available to you right now, even in the middle of a high-tech world.
The Science of Why You’re Stressed
It’s not "all in your head", well, it is, but in a very physical way. Recent research shows that chronic noise, both the literal kind and the digital kind, triggers our body’s stress response. When your phone pings or you see a stressful headline, your brain releases cortisol and adrenaline. It’s the "fight or flight" response, but it’s being triggered by a screen instead of a tiger.
When this happens all day long, your body never gets the chance to reset. This leads to mental fatigue, sleep disturbances, and a feeling of being constantly "on edge." Scientists have found that mental health risks increase significantly when our environment exceeds certain decibel levels, but the same is true for our "digital decibels." If your mind is constantly flooded with information, your soul doesn't have the "quiet" it needs to recover.

Why We Struggle to Unplug
We’ve all said it: "I’m going to put my phone away this weekend." Then, ten minutes later, we’re checking a notification.
Part of the reason is that we are wired for connection. We want to know what’s happening with our friends, our families, and the world. At Boundless, we believe technology is a gift, it’s how we reach the ends of the earth with the Gospel. We even call it The Digital Great Commission.
But like any gift, it needs boundaries. Without them, the tool starts to use us instead of us using the tool. We start to look for our worth in likes and our security in the news, rather than in the unchanging promises of God.
Creating a Sanctuary at Home
Finding peace doesn't mean you have to throw your smartphone in the river. It means being intentional about your environment.
For families, this is especially important. Parents, you are the "gatekeepers" of the digital noise in your home. We often suggest looking into safe tech for the gospel to help create boundaries that protect your children’s minds and hearts while still using digital tools for good.
Here are a few practical steps to lower the digital volume today:
The 20-Minute Silence: Set a timer for 20 minutes. No phone, no TV, no music. Just sit. It will feel uncomfortable at first because we are addicted to stimulation. But in that silence, your brain begins to reset.
Curate Your Sounds: Not all noise is bad. Nature sounds or instrumental worship music can actually lower your cortisol levels.
The "Bedroom Rule": Try to keep your phone out of the bedroom. If you find yourself scrolling at 3 AM because you can't sleep, check out our post on Faith at 3 AM. God is awake so you don't have to be.

The Spiritual Anchor: Peace Beyond Understanding
As a ministry of the Assemblies of God, we believe that true peace is more than just the absence of noise. It is a Person.
Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you" (John 14:27). The "world" gives peace through distractions, entertainment, or temporary quiet. But the peace of Jesus is an anchor that stays steady even when the storm, or the digital noise, is raging.
When we talk about the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, we are talking about being filled with the presence of God. One of the fruits of that Spirit is peace. This isn't a peace you manufacture; it's a peace that the Holy Spirit breathes into you when you invite Him into your day.
The Power of the Pause
Sometimes, you just need a "reset" in the middle of a chaotic Tuesday. This is why we created the Midday Reset. It’s a moment to stop the scroll, take a breath, and remember that you are loved by a God who isn't overwhelmed by the world's problems.
If you’re a parent, you might find that your children are also feeling the weight of the digital world. We’ve put together daily parent devotionals to help you lead your family into that same sense of calm.

Asking the Big Questions
If you find that the "noise" is actually a way of avoiding big questions, like "Am I truly saved?" or "Why am I so tired?", we want to help you walk through those. Dr. Layne McDonald often tackles 7 life questions everyone is afraid to ask, and many of those questions center on finding rest in a restless world.
Don't be afraid of the quiet. The quiet is where God often speaks most clearly. When Elijah was looking for God, he didn't find Him in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. He found Him in a "still, small voice."
In a world that is screaming for your attention, God is whispering for your heart.
A Practical Challenge for This Week
We want to invite you to try a "Digital Fast" for just one hour a day this week.
Pick an hour (maybe right after work or before bed).
Turn off your notifications.
Spend that time in prayer, reading a physical Bible, or talking with your family.
Notice how your body and soul feel after just a few days.
You might find that the "noise" wasn't as important as you thought it was. You might find that the peace of God was waiting for you all along, just beneath the surface of the pings and the scrolls.

Let Us Pray With You
If the noise feels like it’s becoming too much, or if you’re carrying a burden that you just can't shake, please reach out. We are an online church, but the connections we make are very real. Whether you are a shift worker on a break, a caregiver looking for strength in the sickroom, or someone just searching for hope, we are here for you.
You don't have to navigate this digital wilderness alone. Let's find the "quiet waters" together.
