Is the Holy Spirit Real? AG 101: A Beginner’s Guide to a Spirit-Led Life

Is the Holy Spirit Real?

Yes, the Holy Spirit is a real, personal presence, the third person of the Trinity. In the Assemblies of God, we believe the Holy Spirit empowers believers for daily life, provides spiritual gifts, and offers comfort and guidance, just as Jesus promised in the New Testament.

The Midnight Whisper: Is He Really There?

As the sun sets over the Mississippi River and the city of Memphis begins to quiet down for the night, many of us find ourselves in a moment of reflection. Maybe you're sitting on your porch in Cordova or Bartlett, looking at the stars and wondering if there is more to this Christian walk than just attending a service once a week. You’ve heard the name “Holy Spirit” mentioned in songs or prayers, but you might be asking: Is He actually real? And if so, what does He do?

Navigating our modern culture as a believer can feel like trying to find your way through a thick Memphis fog. We are bombarded with noise, opinions, and constant demands. But the good news of the Gospel, and specifically the Pentecostal tradition of the Assemblies of God, is that we are not left to navigate this world alone. God has given us a Helper, a Guide, and a Source of Power.

If you are new to faith or just curious about the “Spirit-led” life people talk about at First Assembly Memphis, this guide is for you. Let’s pull back the curtain and look at what the Bible says about the Person and the Power of the Holy Spirit.

Defining the Essentials: Spiritual Terms to Know

Before we dive deeper, let’s make sure we are speaking the same language. Theology can sometimes feel like a different dialect, so here are a few simple definitions to keep us grounded:

Trinity: The biblical truth that there is one God who exists eternally in three distinct persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. Baptism in the Holy Spirit: A distinct experience following salvation where a believer is filled with the Holy Spirit’s power for witnessing and service, often accompanied by the initial evidence of speaking in tongues. Sanctification: The lifelong process of being set apart for God’s purposes and becoming more like Jesus in our character through the Spirit's help.

Who Is the Holy Spirit?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that the Holy Spirit is an “it” or a “force,” like gravity or electricity. But the Bible describes the Holy Spirit as a Person. He has a will, He has emotions, and He speaks. He is God present with us right now.

Jesus told His disciples in John 14:16-17, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever, the Spirit of truth.” The word "another" in the original Greek means "another of the same kind." Just as Jesus was a real, tangible presence for the disciples, the Holy Spirit is that same real, tangible presence for us today in the 901.

Why Do We Need the Spirit?

Imagine trying to drive from West Memphis to Collierville without any fuel in your tank. You might have a beautiful car (your life) and a map (the Bible), but without the power to move, you aren't going anywhere.

The Holy Spirit provides the “fuel” for the Christian life. Here is what He does:

  1. He Points to Jesus: The Spirit never takes the spotlight for Himself; He always magnifies what Jesus has done for us.

  2. He Convicts and Comforts: He gently shows us where we’ve missed the mark (sin) and reminds us of the grace available to us.

  3. He Empowers for Witness: This is a big part of our Mission and Vision. We believe the Spirit gives us the boldness to share our faith with our neighbors in Memphis and beyond.

The Assemblies of God Distinctive: Spirit Baptism

If you’ve visited FA Memphis or joined us at Boundless Online Church, you might notice we talk a lot about being "filled" with the Spirit. This is what the Assemblies of God calls the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

We believe this is a special experience following salvation. Think of it this way: at salvation, you have the Spirit in you (regeneration). In Spirit baptism, the Spirit is poured out upon you (empowerment). It’s like the difference between having a glass of water and being completely immersed in a pool. This experience is meant to give you a supernatural ability to serve God and love others.

Practical Steps: How to Live a Spirit-Led Life

A Spirit-led life isn't just for "super Christians" or those on a stage. It’s for the mom in Arlington, the student in Germantown, and the retiree in Millington. It’s about a daily partnership with God.

Top 5 Ways to Recognize the Spirit’s Voice

Learning to recognize God’s voice takes practice, but here are five markers to help you discern if what you're hearing is from the Holy Spirit:

  1. It aligns with Scripture: The Holy Spirit will never tell you to do something that contradicts the Bible.

  2. It brings peace: Even if the message is a correction, there is a sense of peace and "rightness" that comes with it.

  3. It promotes love: The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, and peace. If a thought leads to bitterness or hate, it's not from Him.

  4. It glorifies Christ: The Spirit always points toward the character and work of Jesus.

  5. It is often a "still, small voice": He rarely shouts. He whispers to our hearts in the quiet moments of the night.

Finding Your Community in Memphis

Living a Spirit-led life is not meant to be a solo journey. We need each other. Whether you are looking for a church near you in Memphis or you are connecting from the other side of the world, community is where the Spirit’s gifts are truly seen in action.

At First Assembly Memphis, we are a multigenerational family rooted in the 901. We believe that when we gather, the Spirit moves, healing broken hearts, strengthening families, and equipping us to serve our city. If you’ve been feeling isolated or spiritually "stuck," we invite you to come and see what a Spirit-empowered community looks like.

Connect and Grow

Taking the Next Step

Maybe tonight is the night you stop wondering and start asking. The Holy Spirit is a gift from the Father, and He is available to everyone who asks. You don't have to have it all figured out. You just have to be willing to say, "I want more of You, Lord."
