Micro-Study: Peace in the Midst of Persecution (Day 38)

A Message from FA Memphis

If you are reading this from a place where following Jesus feels like a risk, I want you to know something right away: you are not alone.

Whether you are in a crowded city where your faith must remain a secret, or in a remote village where your neighbors don’t understand your hope, God is exactly where you are.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that faith shouldn't be limited by borders or locked doors. We are a global family, and today, on Day 38 of our Micro-Study series, we are looking at a kind of peace that doesn't make sense to the rest of the world.

It’s the peace that stays steady when the ground starts to shake.

The Paradox of Peace

In the world's eyes, "peace" is defined by the absence of trouble. It’s a quiet morning with no emails, a bank account that’s full, or a neighborhood where everyone gets along.

But the peace Jesus offers is different.

In John 16:33, Jesus says, "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Notice the structure of that promise. He doesn't say, "I will give you peace so that you won't have trouble." He says you will have peace while you have trouble. This is a core part of our belief as followers of Christ. We don't wait for the storm to pass to find rest; we find rest in the One who walks on the waves.

For those in hostile environments, this isn't just a nice thought. It’s a survival strategy.

Why Persecution Doesn't Have the Final Word

If you feel "hard-pressed on every side," you are in good company. The Apostle Paul, a man who knew exactly what it felt like to be hunted for his faith, wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9:

"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed."

How is that possible? How can someone be "hard-pressed" but not "crushed"?

The answer lies in the source of our strength. According to the Assemblies of God doctrine, we believe that the Holy Spirit is our Comforter and our Advocate. When your physical surroundings are hostile, the Holy Spirit provides an internal sanctuary.

This is what we call "Spirit-empowered living." It means that your courage doesn't come from your own personality or your own bravery. It comes from the Third Person of the Trinity living inside of you.

When you feel like you are at your breaking point, that is often where the Spirit’s power is most evident. You might be persecuted, but you are never: not for one second: abandoned.

Treasuring the Word Above Fear

The psalmist gives us a practical tool for maintaining this peace in Psalm 119:165: "Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble."

In regions where the Bible might be a restricted book, or where you have to read your scriptures in the middle of the night by the light of a phone screen, the Word of God becomes more than just a book. It becomes your bread.

When you treasure the truth of God’s Word above the fear of what people can do to you, your perspective shifts. You begin to see that while people can take your comfort, your reputation, or even your physical freedom, they cannot take the eternal life that Jesus has secured for you.

The Power of Blessing Your Enemies

One of the most radical things Jesus ever said was, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:44).

This feels impossible when you are the one being mistreated. But there is a secret power in this command. When you pray for the person who is trying to hurt you, you are no longer their victim. You are an ambassador of a higher Kingdom.

By responding with love, you are demonstrating the character of Jesus. You are showing the world: and your persecutors: that your peace is not dependent on how they treat you.

This kind of love is a "kind spark" that can light up the darkest rooms. It reminds me of the story of the kindest spark, where a brave heart can change the atmosphere of an entire community.

Practical Steps for Finding Peace Today

If you are feeling the weight of fear today, here are three simple ways to realign your heart with God’s peace:

  1. Acknowledge the Fear, then Pivot to the Promise. Don't pretend you aren't afraid. Tell God exactly how you feel. Then, immediately quote a promise. Say out loud (or in your heart), "God, I am scared, but You have said You will never leave me or forsake me."

  2. Lean into the Holy Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with a peace that "surpasses all understanding." This is part of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit: it’s for empowerment and comfort in the most difficult hours.

  3. Find Your "Overnight Sanctuary." Even if it’s just five minutes in the quiet of the night, find a space to be alone with God. We often find our greatest faith in the quiet hours.

You Are Part of a Boundless Family

No matter where you are on the map, you have a family here at Boundless Online Church. We believe in the power of prayer and the strength of a global community.

If you’re wondering if God is still moving or if He’s forgotten your region, take a look at the lessons we’ve learned from outpourings of the Spirit. God is not limited by geography, and He is certainly not limited by persecution. In fact, history shows that the Church often grows fastest where it is challenged most.

Stay strong. Stay focused on Jesus. The peace He gives is a gift that the world didn't give you, and the world definitely can't take it away.

A Prayer for Your Peace

Lord, I pray for my brother or sister reading this right now. I ask that Your presence would fill the room where they are sitting. If they are in a place of danger, be their shield. If they are in a place of loneliness, be their friend. Give them a peace that doesn't make sense: a peace that guards their heart and their mind in Christ Jesus. Remind them that they are loved, they are seen, and they are never alone. Amen.
