Micro-Study : Walking in the Spirit Day 33

A Message from FA Memphis

Welcome to Day 33 of our Boundless Daily Micro-Study. We are so glad you’ve joined us today. Whether you are catching this during a quick break on a late-night shift, reading from a hospital waiting room, or starting your morning in a part of the world where you have to keep your faith quiet, you belong here.

Today, we are diving into a concept that sounds simple but changes everything: Walking in the Spirit.

In the Christian life, we often talk about "the walk." It’s a metaphor for how we live out our faith day by day, step by step. It isn’t a sprint, and it’s certainly not a stationary pose. It is a movement. But the key isn’t just that we are moving: it’s how we are moving and who is leading the way.

What Does It Mean to Walk?

When the Bible talks about walking in the Spirit, it’s describing a rhythm of life. Think about how you walk. It’s a series of balanced steps. You lean forward, you place a foot down, you shift your weight, and you repeat. It’s intentional.

Walking in the Spirit means living in accordance with the guidance, promptings, and power of the Holy Spirit. It means we stop relying on our own "flesh": our own human effort, our own limited wisdom, and our own sinful impulses: and we start relying on the Third Person of the Trinity.

For those of us in the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe that the Holy Spirit isn’t just a "vibe" or a distant influence. He is the Comforter, the Helper, and the Source of power for every believer. Walking in Him is the central metaphor for what it means to actually live as a follower of Jesus.

The Great Tug-of-War

If you’ve ever felt like there is a civil war happening inside your soul, you aren’t alone. The Apostle Paul described this perfectly in Galatians 5:16-17:

"So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh."

This is the daily reality for all of us. Our "flesh": that part of us that wants to be the boss, that gets easily offended, and that seeks comfort over Christ: is constantly pulling us one way. The Spirit is pulling us the other.

Walking in the Spirit isn't about reaching perfection where you never feel the pull of the flesh again. Instead, it’s about choosing which voice you are going to listen to in the moment of temptation or stress. When you walk by the Spirit, those natural interests in negative behaviors and old habits start to fade. Not because you’re "trying harder," but because you’re being empowered by Someone greater.

Empowerment for the Journey

At Boundless Online Church, we emphasize the AG doctrine of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. We believe this is a distinct experience available to every believer, providing the power to witness and live a holy life.

If you’ve ever wondered about this, you can read more here: What is the initial evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit?.

This empowerment isn't just for "super-Christians." It’s for the mom trying to keep her cool with three toddlers. It’s for the office worker facing an unethical boss. It’s for the person struggling with a long-term illness who needs the strength to see another day. Walking in the Spirit is how we access the "calm power" of God in the middle of a chaotic world.

Staying Connected to the Vine

Jesus gave us the ultimate secret to walking in the Spirit in John 15:5:

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."

Walking in the Spirit is essentially a "remaining" walk. It is staying connected to the source. A branch doesn't struggle or sweat to produce grapes; it just stays attached to the vine and lets the life of the vine flow through it.

When we stay connected through prayer, through reading the Word, and through a posture of surrender, the "fruit" starts to show up naturally. You’ll find yourself being more patient than you used to be. You’ll find a peace that doesn't make sense given your circumstances. That’s not you: that’s the Spirit walking through you.

Practical Steps for Your Day

So, how do we practically "walk" today? Here are a few ways to keep in step:

  1. Morning Surrender: Before you check your phone or start your shift, simply say, "Holy Spirit, I give you this day. Lead my steps."

  2. The "Pause" Prayer: When someone cuts you off in traffic or sends a stinging email, pause for three seconds. Ask the Spirit for the right response before you react.

  3. Fill the Gap with Truth: If you’re a shift worker or someone who spends a lot of time alone, use that time to listen to worship or a Bible study. We have a great collection of resources at Boundless Media to help keep your mind stayed on Him.

  4. Listen for Promptings: Sometimes the Spirit will give you a "nudge" to check on a friend or to say a kind word to a stranger. That is part of the walk. Follow the nudge.

The Result: A Life of Fruit

When we walk in the Spirit, the "fruit" of our lives changes. Instead of the works of the flesh: discord, jealousy, fits of rage: we see love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

This isn't just for our benefit. The world is watching. When we walk in the Spirit, we become a living testimony of God’s grace. People will see your peace in the middle of a storm and ask, "How are you doing that?" That is your open door to share the hope of Jesus.

If you’re feeling unsure about your faith or wondering if you’re truly saved, we have a resource for you: How can I be sure I’m truly saved?. Knowing you belong to Him is the first step in walking with Him.

We Are Walking With You

Walking in the Spirit isn't something you have to do alone. We are a global community, and we are here to support one another. Whether you are part of our Bible Study Club or just lurking and learning, we are glad you are here.

Don't worry if you feel like you've tripped or taken a wrong turn today. Walking involves getting back up. The Holy Spirit is the one who helps us stand and keeps us moving forward. His grace is sufficient for you, right where you are.

Let’s Pray

Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. We don't want to walk through this life on our own strength anymore. We surrender our steps to You today. Fill us afresh. Give us the power to love others, the peace to handle stress, and the wisdom to make the right choices. Help us to stay connected to the Vine. In Jesus' name, Amen.
