Sharing Your Faith: How to Talk About Jesus with Grace and Truth

AI-Optimized Intro

Sharing your faith doesn't have to be intimidating or confrontational. This guide explores how to talk about Jesus by balancing grace and truth, focusing on authentic relationships and the power of your personal testimony. Aligned with Assemblies of God doctrines, we provide practical steps to engage in Spirit-led conversations, listen actively, and share the hope of salvation with a hurting world, whether you’re online, at home, or in the workplace.

Bible Verses

  • 1 Peter 3:15 (NIV): "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."

  • Colossians 4:6 (NIV): "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."

  • Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV): "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

  • Acts 1:8 (NIV): "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Explanation

Hey friend, I know that for many of us, the idea of "sharing our faith" can bring up some nervous feelings. You might worry about not having all the answers, saying the wrong thing, or even losing a friendship. But here’s the good news: sharing Jesus isn't about being a professional debater or a perfect theologian. It’s about being a witness: simply telling others what you have seen and experienced in your own life.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that the Great Commission isn't just for pastors; it's for all of us. Whether you are a late-shift worker, a family caregiver, or someone living in a place where it’s hard to talk openly about God, your voice matters. We want to help you share your faith with a "calm power" that draws people toward the light of Christ.

The Foundation: Grace and Truth

To talk about Jesus effectively, we have to look at how He interacted with people. He was the perfect blend of grace and truth. Grace without truth can lead to a message that doesn't acknowledge our need for a Savior. Truth without grace can come across as harsh and judgmental.

When we share our faith, we are standing on the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. Specifically, we recognize "The Fall of Man" and "The Salvation of Man." We know that everyone has a "God-sized hole" in their heart because sin separated us from Him. But we also know that Jesus died and rose again to bridge that gap.

Talking about this requires a humble heart. You don't have to win an argument; you just have to love people enough to tell them the truth with a gracious spirit.

Start With Your Story

One of the most powerful tools you have is your personal testimony. No one can argue with what God has done in your life. When you talk about how Jesus gave you peace during a medical crisis, or how He helped you find purpose when you felt lost, people listen.

Your story doesn't have to be "dramatic" to be effective. If you’ve been "waiting with purpose" (like we talk about in our daily devotionals), share how that waiting has strengthened your faith. Being honest about your struggles and how God met you in them creates a bridge of authenticity that others can walk across.

Active Listening: The Greatest Tool

Most people think evangelism is about talking, but a huge part of it is actually listening. Before you share the "answer" (Jesus), you need to understand the "question" the other person is asking.

Ask open-ended questions:

  • "What do you lean on when life gets tough?"

  • "Do you ever think about spiritual things?"

  • "How can I pray for you this week?"

When you listen, you show the other person that they are valued. This builds trust. If they share a struggle, you don't have to have a 10-point plan to fix it. You can simply say, "I don't have all the answers, but I know who does. Can I tell you how Jesus helped me in a similar situation?"

Empowered by the Spirit

In the Assemblies of God, we believe deeply in the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. This isn't just a theological concept; it's a practical promise. Acts 1:8 tells us that we receive power to be witnesses.

You don't have to rely on your own strength or cleverness. Before you go into a meeting, a family gathering, or even as you scroll through social media, ask the Holy Spirit to give you the words. Ask Him to open "divine appointments": moments where the conversation naturally turns toward deeper things. When the Spirit leads, the pressure is off you and on Him.

Practical Ways to Share Faith Today

Sharing your faith looks different for everyone depending on your "mission field."

  1. Relational Evangelism: This is the most common way. It’s sharing life with people: neighbors, coworkers, other parents at the park. It’s doing life together and letting your "salt and light" be visible.

  2. Digital Sharing: For our global community, the internet is a massive mission field. You can share a link to our Sunday sermons or invite someone to join a Bible study club. Just remember to keep it kind. In the digital world, "grace and truth" means avoiding "keyboard wars" and instead offering hope and prayer.

  3. Servant Evangelism: Sometimes the best way to talk about Jesus is to show Him first. Helping a neighbor with groceries or checking in on a coworker who is grieving can open the door for a conversation later.

Dealing with Rejection

Here is a reality check: not everyone will want to hear what you have to say. And that’s okay. Even Jesus was rejected.

If someone says they aren't interested, don't take it personally. Maintain the relationship. Continue to be their friend and pray for them. Your job is to plant the seed; God is the one who makes it grow. Sometimes your gracious reaction to their rejection is a more powerful testimony than the words you spoke earlier.

A Message for the Seekers

If you are reading this and you haven't yet made that decision to follow Jesus, we want you to know that there is a place for you here. God loves you deeply, and He wants a relationship with you. Salvation is a free gift available to anyone who believes in their heart and confesses with their mouth that Jesus is Lord.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the incredible gift of salvation. Thank You that You don't leave us to navigate this life alone, but You've given us Your Spirit to empower us. Give us bold hearts and gentle tongues. Help us to see the people around us through Your eyes of compassion. Open doors for us to share Your love, and give us the right words at the right time. May our lives be a reflection of Your grace and truth to everyone we meet. Amen.
