The Fruit of the Spirit represents nine divine virtues, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, produced by the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life. Unlike human effort, this fruit is the natural result of abiding in Jesus and surrendering to His transformative power. It serves as the evidence of a maturing faith and the primary way Christians reflect the character of Christ to a hurting world.
The Foundation: Scripture
Before we dive into what these traits look like in our daily lives, let’s look at the foundation found in God’s Word.
Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV)
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law."
John 15:4-5 (NIV)
"Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
Understanding the Fruit
When we talk about the "Fruit of the Spirit," it’s important to notice that the word "fruit" is singular. It’s not "fruits," like a basket of different varieties you can pick and choose from.
Instead, it is one fruit with nine characteristics.
Think of it like an orange. You have one piece of fruit, but when you peel it, there are many segments inside. All these traits are meant to grow together as we walk with Jesus.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe that this spiritual growth isn't about trying harder to be "good." It’s about letting the Holy Spirit change us from the inside out. This aligns with the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, specifically the truth about Sanctification, the act of separation from that which is evil, and of dedication unto God.

A Closer Look at the Nine Traits
Let’s break these down into simple terms. How do these show up when you're working the night shift, caring for a family member, or navigating a difficult season in a place where it’s hard to be a Christian?
1. Love
This isn't just a feeling. It is agape love, a choice to do what is best for another person, even if it costs us something. It’s the kind of love Jesus showed on the cross. It’s the engine that drives all the other traits.
2. Joy
Joy is different from happiness. Happiness depends on our circumstances. Joy depends on our Savior. You can have joy even when things are falling apart because you know God is still on the throne.
3. Peace
This is a quiet confidence. It’s the "shalom" of God that settles your heart when the world around you is loud and chaotic.
4. Patience (Longsuffering)
Patience is the ability to endure difficult people or situations without blowing up. It’s giving others the same grace God gives us every single day.

5. Kindness
Kindness is love in action. It’s the small things, a word of encouragement to a coworker or a helping hand to a neighbor. It’s seeing people the way Jesus sees them.
6. Goodness
Goodness is about integrity. It’s doing the right thing even when nobody is watching. It reflects the pure heart of God in a world that often celebrates the opposite.
7. Faithfulness
This is being reliable and trustworthy. Are you someone people can count on? More importantly, are you staying true to your commitment to God, even when it’s not popular?
8. Gentleness
Gentleness is often mistaken for weakness, but it’s actually "power under control." It’s responding to a harsh word with a soft one. It’s being humble and teachable.
9. Self-Control
This is the ability to say "no" to our fleshly desires and "yes" to God’s will. It’s the discipline to keep our tempers, our tongues, and our appetites in check through the Spirit’s power.
Why We Can't Do It Alone
If you’ve ever tried to force yourself to be more patient or more joyful, you know how exhausting it is. We usually fail pretty quickly.
That’s because these aren't "The Works of the Human Will." They are the "Fruit of the Spirit."
Our job isn't to produce the fruit; our job is to abide in the Vine (Jesus). When we spend time in prayer, read the Bible, and listen to Sunday Sermons, we are staying connected to the source of life.
As we stay connected, the Holy Spirit naturally begins to produce these traits in us. It’s a process called sanctification. It doesn’t happen overnight. Just like a real fruit tree takes time, sunshine, and rain to grow, our spiritual fruit grows through different seasons of life.

For Our Global Family
We know that many of you reading this are in unique situations.
Maybe you are a late-shift worker catching this on your break. Maybe you are a caregiver who feels isolated at home. Or perhaps you live in an area where attending a physical church isn't safe or possible.
The beauty of the Holy Spirit is that He isn't limited by location or schedule. Whether you are in a hospital room, a warehouse, or a quiet bedroom, the Spirit is with you. He is working in you right now to cultivate these beautiful traits.
If you're feeling like your "fruit" is a bit withered today, don't be discouraged. God is the Master Gardener. He knows exactly what you need to flourish. He provides the strength for us to meet Jesus and grow in faith online, regardless of where we are on the map.

A Prayer for You
Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. We confess that we cannot live a life that honors You on our own strength. We ask that You would help us to abide in Jesus today. Let Your love, joy, peace, and all the segments of Your fruit grow in our hearts. Transform us so that when the world looks at us, they see a reflection of Your character. Strengthen our global family, especially those in hard places, and let them feel Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
