What Does the Assemblies of God Believe About Holy Spirit Baptism?

The Assemblies of God believes Holy Spirit Baptism is a distinct experience following salvation, empowering believers for Christian service. It is characterized by the initial physical evidence of speaking in tongues and provides supernatural strength to witness and live a holy, Christ-centered life according to biblical patterns.

At First Assembly Memphis, our mission is to see the 901 community transformed by the power of God. Understanding the work of the Holy Spirit is central to this because it equips every believer in Memphis, Cordova, and beyond to live out their faith with bold, supernatural confidence. Whether you are joining us in person or through Boundless Online Church, this experience is available for you today.

The Foundation: The Promise of the Father

In the Assemblies of God, we look directly to the Scriptures to define our experience. According to the 16 Fundamental Truths, all believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father, the baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire. This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church.

With this baptism comes the enduement of power for life and service, and the bestowment of the gifts and their uses in the work of the ministry. This experience is distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth (salvation). When you give your life to Christ, the Holy Spirit dwells within you, but the baptism in the Spirit is an overflowing, an immersion that clothes the believer with power from on high.

Definition: Baptism in the Holy Spirit A divine empowerment for witness and service, distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth, as seen in the Book of Acts.

Why Does the 901 Need Spirit-Empowered Believers?

Living in the Memphis area presents unique opportunities and challenges. To be a light in our neighborhoods, we need more than just good intentions; we need the "Acts 1:8" kind of power. This baptism brings a deepened reverence for God, an intensified consecration to God and dedication to His work, and a more active love for Christ, for His Word, and for the lost.

The Initial Physical Evidence

A distinctive tenet of the Assemblies of God is the belief in the initial physical evidence of Holy Spirit Baptism. We believe that the baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance (Acts 2:4).

This is not the "gift of tongues" mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12, which is used for public edification in a church service, but rather an initial sign and a personal prayer language that follows the infilling. It serves as a marker that the believer has entered into a new dimension of spiritual life and communication with the Creator.

Definition: Initial Physical Evidence The biblical sign of speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance, marking the entrance into the Spirit-filled life.

Scriptural Foundations for Spirit Baptism

To help you study this deeper, look at how the Bible records these experiences. It wasn't a one-time accident; it was a consistent pattern in the early church.

Practical Effects of the Spirit-Filled Life

What does this look like on a Tuesday afternoon in Cordova or a Friday night in Bartlett? The Assemblies of God teaches that the Spirit-filled life should result in:

  1. Boldness in Witnessing: A supernatural ability to share the Gospel with friends, family, and coworkers without fear.

  2. Power in Prayer: An enhanced prayer life where the Spirit helps us pray even when we don't know the words (Romans 8:26).

  3. Sensitivity to the Spirit: A sharper "spiritual ear" to hear God’s promptings for ministry, like stopping to pray for someone at the grocery store.

  4. Manifestation of Fruit: While the baptism provides power, it should also lead to a greater harvest of the Fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, etc.) as we walk in obedience.

  5. Operation of Gifts: A readiness to be used in the spiritual gifts (healing, prophecy, wisdom) to build up the local body at FA Memphis.

Addressing Misconceptions

There are many myths about Holy Spirit Baptism. Let’s clear a few up:

  • "It’s only for the super-spiritual." No. Peter said in Acts 2 that the promise is for everyone whom the Lord calls. It is a gift, not a reward for perfect behavior.

  • "It’s scary or chaotic." Paul tells us that God is not the author of confusion but of peace. In a healthy Pentecostal environment, the Spirit’s work is orderly and points people toward Jesus, not toward the "experience" itself.

  • "I got everything at salvation." While you certainly receive the Holy Spirit at salvation (you cannot belong to Christ without His Spirit), the baptism is an additional "clothing" of power described throughout the Book of Acts as a separate event.

Definition: Sanctification The act of separation from that which is evil, and of dedication unto God. The Holy Spirit is the primary agent in this ongoing process of becoming more like Christ.

A Community of Power and Love

The Assemblies of God doctrine on Holy Spirit Baptism isn't about being "better" than other Christians; it's about being "better equipped" to serve a world that is hurting. In Memphis, we see the needs every day. We see the brokenness and the hunger for something real. The Holy Spirit is the "Something Real" the world is looking for.

We invite you to explore this journey with us. Whether you’ve been a believer for decades or you’re just starting to ask questions, there is always "more" in the Spirit.
