What Is the Assemblies of God? AG 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Our Beliefs for the 901

AG 101: Beliefs for the 901

The Assemblies of God is a Spirit-filled, Bible-centered Protestant fellowship that emphasizes the power of the Holy Spirit and the authority of Scripture. We focus on a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, divine healing, and sharing the Gospel with the local Memphis community and the world.

Walking into a new church can feel like stepping into a conversation that’s been going on for years. You hear new terms, see different ways of praying, and might wonder, "What exactly do these people believe?" Whether you are in Cordova, Bartlett, or Arlington, finding a church home starts with understanding the foundation. If you’ve been looking for a place where the Bible is the final word and the Holy Spirit is welcome, you’ve found it here at First Assembly Memphis.

The Assemblies of God (AG) isn't just a local group; it is a global family. With over 69 million members worldwide, it is one of the fastest-growing Christian movements in history. In the 901, we are committed to taking those global truths and living them out in our neighborhoods, from the streets of Memphis to the suburbs of Shelby County.

The Four Cardinal Doctrines: What We Stand On

While we have 16 Fundamental Truths that guide our theology, four stand out as the pillars of our faith. These "Cardinal Doctrines" represent the heart of our message.

  1. Salvation through Jesus Christ: We believe that everyone has sinned and is separated from God, but Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection provide the only way for us to be forgiven and restored to a relationship with Him.

  2. Baptism in the Holy Spirit: We believe this is a distinct experience following salvation that empowers believers for witness and service, just as it did for the early church in the book of Acts.

  3. Divine Healing: We believe that God still performs miracles today. Healing for the physical body is provided for in the atonement of Jesus Christ and is a privilege for all believers.

  4. The Blessed Hope: We believe in the "Rapture", the moment when Jesus will return to gather His followers to be with Him forever.

Filled with the Holy Spirit

Understanding the "Pentecostal" Difference

You might hear the word "Pentecostal" used to describe First Assembly Memphis. This doesn't mean we are "exclusive" or "different" in a way that separates us from other Christians. Instead, it describes our emphasis on the Holy Spirit’s active role in our lives today.

Definition: Pentecostal Refers to the belief that the experiences of the early church at Pentecost (recorded in Acts 2) are still available and necessary for believers today. This includes the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and the use of spiritual gifts.

In our services, you’ll see people who are passionate about worship. You’ll hear prayers for the sick and messages that challenge you to grow. Whether you are attending in person at FA Memphis or joining us through Boundless Online Church, the goal is the same: to experience the presence of God in a way that changes your Monday through Saturday.

Why Biblical Authority Matters for Your Family

In a world where "truth" seems to change with the headlines, we believe in a foundation that never shifts. The Bible is not just a historical book; it is God’s inspired Word, given to us as a manual for life. For families in Cordova or Bartlett trying to raise children with strong values, the Bible provides the clarity we need.

Biblically Centered
Definition: The Trinity The belief in one God who exists eternally in three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. They are one in essence but distinct in personhood.

We don't just read the Bible; we apply it. From our MDO programs to our recreational sports, every ministry at FA Memphis is designed to help you and your family grow in the knowledge of God's Word.

Life in the 901: Faith for the Whole Family

Faith isn't just about what happens inside a church building on Sunday morning. It’s about how we treat our neighbors in the 901. It’s about how we navigate the stresses of work in Memphis or the challenges of parenting in Arlington.

Strengthening Families

At FA Memphis, we believe that "Sanctification" is the process of God helping us get better every day.

Definition: Sanctification The ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life to set them apart from sin and make them more like Jesus Christ in character and action.

We aren't a community of perfect people. We are a community of people who are being changed by a perfect God. We invite you to join us, whether you are just starting to ask questions or you’ve been following Jesus for decades.
