What Is the Assemblies of God View on Forgiveness? AG 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Grace.

The Assemblies of God view forgiveness as a free, unmerited gift from God through Jesus Christ. It requires sincere repentance and faith, resulting in the total removal of guilt (justification) and a restored relationship with God, enabling believers to extend that same grace and forgiveness to others.

Why Does Forgiveness Feel So Hard?

If you’ve ever sat in traffic on Germantown Parkway or dealt with a difficult situation at work in downtown Memphis, you know that people can let you down. We carry around the weight of things people have said to us, and the weight of things we’ve done that we aren’t proud of.

Many people ask: "Is there a limit to God's mercy?" or "Do I have to be perfect to belong to a church?"

The answer is a resounding no. In the Assemblies of God (AG) tradition, we believe that forgiveness isn't something you earn by being a "good person." It’s something you receive because God is a good Father. Whether you are in Cordova, Bartlett, or joining us from the other side of the world through Boundless Online Church, the message is the same: grace is available for you today.

The Foundation: Grace Over Guilt

At FA Memphis, we follow the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. These aren't just dry rules; they are a roadmap for a life of freedom.

When we talk about forgiveness, we start with Fundamental Truth 5: The Salvation of Man. This truth explains that we are all in need of a Savior because of the "fall" of humanity. Sin is what separates us from God's best for our lives, leading to anxiety, brokenness, and a sense of being lost.

But here is the good news: Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ.

Definition: Repentance Repentance (from the Greek word metanoia) literally means a "change of mind." It is the act of turning away from a life led by self and turning toward a life led by God. It isn't just saying "sorry"; it's a heart-level U-turn.

Is Forgiveness an Event or a Process?

In AG theology, forgiveness has two beautiful dimensions:

  1. The Event (Justification): The moment you put your faith in Jesus and repent, God declares you "not guilty." Your record is wiped clean. This is a legal and spiritual reality.

  2. The Process (Sanctification): While your standing with God is fixed the moment you believe, learning to live out that forgiveness, and learning to forgive others, is a lifelong journey. We call this sanctification.

Definition: Sanctification Sanctification is the process of being set apart for God’s purposes. It is the lifelong work of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life, helping them to become more like Jesus in their character and actions.

Forgiving Others: The 901 Perspective

Living in the 901 means being part of a vibrant, diverse community. It also means navigating real-life conflict. We believe that because we have been forgiven so much by God, we are empowered to forgive others.

Does that mean you have to be a doormat? Absolutely not.

Forgiveness is about releasing the "debt" someone owes you so that bitterness doesn't rot your heart. It doesn't always mean immediate reconciliation if the other person is still harmful or unrepentant. We believe in healthy boundaries, especially when safety is an issue. But we also believe that holding onto a grudge is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to get sick.

5 Steps to Walking in Freedom

If you are struggling with a past mistake or finding it impossible to forgive someone who hurt you, try these practical steps:

Step

Action

Biblical Goal

1. Admit the Pain

Don't suppress your feelings. Tell God exactly where it hurts.

Honesty (Psalm 62:8)

2. Repent & Receive

If you messed up, ask for God's forgiveness. It is already provided.

Cleansing (1 John 1:9)

3. Release the Debt

Make a conscious decision to stop "charging" that person in your mind.

Freedom (Matthew 6:14)

4. Seek Community

Don't heal alone. Join a Life Group in Memphis or a digital circle online.

Connection (Galatians 6:2)

5. Focus on the Future

Grace isn't just about your past; it's about God's plan for your future.

Purpose (Jeremiah 29:11)

Walking in Freedom

Redemption Over Shame

One of the most common things we see at FA Memphis is people trapped in a cycle of shame. Shame says, "I am a mistake," while conviction (from the Holy Spirit) says, "I made a mistake."

If you are dealing with addiction or deep-seated anxiety, please know that God's grace is bigger than your struggle. We don't ignore sin, it's destructive, but we address it with a pathway toward restoration. You don't have to clean yourself up before you come to God; you come to God so He can help you clean up.
