Bible Study: A Scriptural Guide to the 16 Truths

The 16 Fundamental Truths provide a biblical framework that defines our core beliefs and guides our walk with Jesus. These non-negotiable doctrines ground us in Scripture, ensuring that our faith is built on the solid rock of God's Word rather than shifting cultural opinions or personal feelings.

In this guide, we will explore each of the 16 Fundamental Truths with their scriptural foundations, practical applications, and a heart for how they help you succeed in your personal journey of faith and spiritual growth.

The Foundation of Truth: Why Doctrine Matters

Have you ever felt like you were standing on shifting sand? In a world filled with loud voices, conflicting opinions, and endless digital noise, it is easy to feel disoriented. We all need an anchor. For the believer, that anchor is the Word of God. Doctrine, the formal word for what we believe, isn't just for scholars in dusty libraries. It is for the person waking up with anxiety, the parent trying to raise children with hope, and the seeker looking for a real encounter with the Divine.

The 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God represent more than a list; they are a map. They help us understand who God is, who we are, and how we are called to live. As you read through this guide, remember our core message: You are seen. You are loved. You are not forgotten. You are never alone. God has given us His Truth so that we can walk in freedom.

1. The Scriptures Inspired

The first and most vital truth is that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. It is not merely a collection of wise sayings or historical accounts. It is the infallible, authoritative rule for our faith and conduct. When we open the Bible, we are not just reading a book; we are listening to the heart of our Creator.

Scripture tells us, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16). This means that every verse has a purpose in shaping your life. If you have ever wondered if the Bible is still relevant today, we encourage you to read more about how it remains historically accurate and spiritually powerful.

2. The One True God

The One True God

We believe in the One True God who has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent "I AM." He is the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer of mankind. Furthermore, He has revealed Himself as a Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. While the word "Trinity" is not in the Bible, the concept is woven throughout.

Consider the baptism of Jesus in Matthew 3:16-17: the Son is baptized, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father speaks from heaven. These three are distinct yet one. This relationship of love within the Godhead is the very reason why you were created for community and connection. You were made in the image of a God who is, in His very nature, relational.

3. The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. This truth is the hinge upon which all of Christianity swings. We believe in His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His substitutionary work on the cross, His bodily resurrection from the dead, and His exaltation to the right hand of God.

Jesus is not just a "good teacher" or a "prophet." He is Lord. John 1:1 tells us, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." By acknowledging His deity, we recognize that when Jesus died for us, it was God Himself stepping into our brokenness to bring us home.

4. The Fall of Man

Man was created good and upright; for God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." However, man by voluntary transgression fell and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God (Genesis 1:26, 27; 2:17; 3:6; Romans 5:12-19).

Acknowledging the "fall" is not about self-shame; it is about honesty. We know something is wrong with the world because we know something is wrong within us. This doctrine explains why we need a Savior. It sets the stage for the most beautiful story ever told, the story of redemption.

5. The Salvation of Man

Salvation through Christ

Man's only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ the Son of God. Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, being justified by grace through faith, man becomes an heir of God, according to the hope of eternal life (Luke 24:47; John 3:3; Romans 10:13-15; Ephesians 2:8; Titus 2:11; 3:5-7).

If you are searching for a fresh start, salvation is the door. It is a free gift that you cannot earn, but you must receive. To dive deeper into what this means for you today, visit our guide on understanding salvation.

6. The Ordinances of the Church

We practice two primary ordinances: Water Baptism and Holy Communion. Water baptism by immersion is commanded in the Scriptures. All who repent and believe on Christ as Savior and Lord are to be baptized. This is a public declaration to the world that they have died with Christ and that they also have been raised with Him to walk in newness of life (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:16; Acts 10:47, 48; Romans 6:4).

Holy Communion, or the Lord’s Supper, consists of the elements, bread and the fruit of the vine, as a symbol expressing our sharing the divine nature of our Lord Jesus Christ, a memorial of His suffering and death, and a prophecy of His second coming (2 Peter 1:4; 1 Corinthians 11:26). These acts are physical reminders of spiritual realities, keeping our hearts tethered to the sacrifice of Jesus.

7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit

All believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father, the baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire, according to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church. With it comes the enduement of power for life and service, the bestowment of the gifts and their uses in the work of the ministry (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4, 8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31).

The Holy Spirit is not a vague force; He is a Person who empowers you to live the Christian life. You don't have to do this alone. For more on this life-changing experience, see our study on Who is the Holy Spirit?.

8. The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

The baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance (Acts 2:4). The speaking in tongues in this instance is the same in essence as the gift of tongues, but is different in purpose and use. This truth emphasizes that God wants to communicate with us and through us in ways that transcend our natural ability.

9. Sanctification

Sanctification is an act of separation from that which is evil, and of dedication unto God (Romans 12:1, 2; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 13:12). It is a progressive work that continues throughout the life of a believer. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we are able to obey the command: "Be ye holy, for I am holy."

This isn't about perfectionism; it's about direction. Every day, we choose to follow Jesus a little more closely. If you want to start a daily rhythm of growth, check out our tips on how to study the Bible for beginners.

10. The Church and Its Mission

The Global Church

The Church is the Body of Christ, the habitation of God through the Spirit, with divine appointments for the fulfillment of her Great Commission. Each believer, born of the Spirit, is an integral part of the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn, which are written in heaven (Ephesians 1:22, 23; 2:22; Hebrews 12:23).

The mission of the Church is to evangelize the world, to be a corporate body in which man may worship God, to be a channel of God’s purpose to build a body of saints being perfected in the image of His Son, and to be a people who demonstrate God’s love and compassion for all the world.

11. The Ministry

A divinely called and scripturally ordained ministry has been provided by our Lord for the fourfold purpose of leading the Church in: Evangelization of the world, Worship of God, Building a body of saints being perfected in the image of His Son, and Meeting human need with ministries of love and compassion (Mark 16:15-20; John 4:23, 24; Ephesians 4:11-16; James 1:27).

12. Divine Healing

Divine healing is an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement, and is the privilege of all believers (Isaiah 53:4, 5; Matthew 8:16, 17; James 5:14-16). We believe that the same Jesus who healed the blind and the lame 2,000 years ago is still the Healer today. If you are hurting, we invite you to submit a request on our Prayer Wall.

13. The Blessed Hope

The resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord is the imminent and blessed hope of the church (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17; Romans 8:23; Titus 2:13; 1 Corinthians 15:51, 52). This is the "Rapture," and it reminds us that this world is not our final home.

14. The Millennial Reign of Christ

The second coming of Christ includes the rapture of the saints, which is our blessed hope, followed by the visible return of Christ with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years (Zechariah 14:5; Matthew 24:27; Revelation 1:7; 19:11-14; 20:1-6). This reign will bring the salvation of national Israel and the establishment of universal peace.

15. The Final Judgment

There will be a final judgment in which the wicked dead will be raised and judged according to their works. Whosoever is not found written in the Book of Life, together with the devil and his angels, the beast and the false prophet, will be consigned to the everlasting punishment in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death (Matthew 25:46; Mark 9:43-48; Revelation 19:20; 20:11-15; 21:8).

16. The New Heavens and the New Earth

New Heavens and New Earth

"We, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness" (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21, 22). This is the ultimate victory of God. All sorrow, pain, and death will be gone forever. We will live in perfect communion with God and one another in a restored creation.
