Bible Study: Who Is Jesus Christ?

Jesus Christ is the divine Son of God, the eternal Word made flesh, and the only Savior of the world. He is fully God and fully human, having lived a sinless life, died for our sins, and risen from the dead to offer eternal life and reconciliation with God to all who believe.

This comprehensive guide explores the identity of Jesus through the lens of Scripture, history, and the famous "Trilemma" argument, helping you discover why His life remains the most significant turning point in human history and what it means for you today.

The Eternal Word: Understanding the Divinity of Jesus

To understand who Jesus is, we must look beyond the pages of history and into the heart of eternity. The Gospel of John provides one of the most profound declarations of Jesus’ identity found in all of Scripture. It doesn't start with His birth in a manger; it starts before the creation of time itself.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made" (John 1:1-3).

The Word Made Flesh

The term "Word" (Logos in Greek) was a powerful concept to both Jewish and Greek listeners. To the Jew, God’s Word was His creative power and His revelation. To the Greek, the Logos was the divine reason that governed the universe. By identifying Jesus as the Word, John is saying that the Creator of the universe has become a participant in His creation. Jesus is not just a messenger from God; He is God Himself, taking on human form to reach us in our isolation and pain.

This is the doctrine of the Incarnation, the "enfleshment" of God. When Jesus walked the dusty roads of Galilee, He was not a "part-time" God or a man who became divine. He was, and is, fully God and fully man. This dual nature is essential because, as a man, He could represent us, and as God, His sacrifice could satisfy the requirements of divine justice. He became like us so that we could be reconciled to Him.

"Who Do You Say That I Am?" , A Personal Question

In the region of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked His disciples a question that remains the most important question anyone will ever answer: "But who do you say that I am?" (Matthew 16:15). Peter, speaking for the group, answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Who Do You Say I Am?

Jesus’ response to Peter is telling. He didn't say Peter was a good student or a wise philosopher. He told Peter that this realization didn't come from human logic but was revealed by God the Father. Knowing Jesus isn't just about collecting historical facts; it is a spiritual revelation that changes the core of who we are. When we recognize Him as "the Christ" (the Messiah), we are acknowledging Him as the promised King who came to set things right.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that this question isn't just for the disciples in the first century. It is a question Jesus asks every soul today. Are you seeing Him as a distant historical figure, a good moral teacher, or as your Lord and Savior? The Only Way: Jesus as the Exclusive Path to Peace

In a world full of diverse opinions and spiritual paths, the claims of Jesus are radical. During His final night with His disciples, He made a statement that has challenged the world for two thousand years: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6).

The Way, The Truth, & The Life

Jesus didn't claim to show *a* way; He claimed to *be* the way. He didn't claim to teach *a* truth; He claimed to *be* the truth. He didn't claim to offer *a* life; He claimed to *be* the source of life. This exclusivity isn't meant to be arrogant or unkind; it is a direct result of His identity. If He is truly God in the flesh, then He is the only one capable of bridging the gap between a holy God and a broken humanity.

This "bridge" was built on the cross. Because of our sin, the ways we have turned away from God and hurt others, there is a separation that we cannot fix on our own. No amount of good works, religious rituals, or positive thinking can cross that chasm. But Jesus, being sinless, took the weight of our failures upon Himself. He died the death we deserved so that we could live the life He offers. If you are feeling the weight of your past or the exhaustion of trying to be "good enough," remember that Jesus has already done the work. Liar, Lunatic, or Lord? The Trilemma of C.S. Lewis

Many people today try to take a "middle ground" when it comes to Jesus. They say, "I believe Jesus was a great moral teacher, but I don't believe He was God." The famous author C.S. Lewis argued in his book *Mere Christianity* that this is the one option Jesus didn't leave open to us.

Lewis proposed what is often called the "Trilemma." Think about the things Jesus said. He claimed to forgive sins (something only God can do). He claimed to have existed before the world began. He claimed that He would judge the world. If someone said these things and they weren't true, that person would not be a "great moral teacher." They would be one of two things:

1. **A Liar:** Someone who knew they weren't God but intentionally deceived people for power or fame. But nothing in Jesus’ life, His humility, His sacrifice, His love for the marginalized, points to Him being a con artist.

2. **A Lunatic:** Someone who genuinely believed they were God but was deeply deluded, on the level of someone claiming to be a poached egg. Yet, Jesus' teachings are the most profound, stable, and influential ethical framework in human history. He didn't act like a madman.

3. **Lord:** If He wasn't a liar and He wasn't a lunatic, the only remaining logical conclusion is that He was exactly who He claimed to be: the Lord of all creation. As Lewis famously wrote, "You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse."

The Resurrection: The Proof of the Claim

What sets Jesus apart from every other religious leader is the empty tomb. If Jesus had stayed dead, His claims would have died with Him. But the testimony of hundreds of witnesses, the radical transformation of His disciples (who were willing to die for what they had seen), and the explosive growth of the early church all point to a historical reality: He rose from the grave.

The resurrection is God’s "Amen" to Jesus' "It is finished." It is the proof that His sacrifice was accepted and that death has been defeated. Because He lives, we can have hope even in the face of our greatest fears, including death itself. This hope isn't a wish; it is a confident expectation based on a historical event.

How Jesus Changes History and Your Life Today

Jesus didn't just change the calendar from B.C. to A.D.; He changed the way we understand love, power, and human value. He taught that the greatest among us is the servant. He showed that every person, regardless of their background or past, has intrinsic dignity because they are loved by the Father. He offered forgiveness to His enemies and peace to the anxious.

Knowing Jesus personally means that you are never truly alone. It means you have a Friend who understands your weaknesses, a King who protects your soul, and a Savior who has already secured your future. Whether you are working late hours, caring for a loved one, or quietly searching for answers from behind a screen, Jesus sees you. He loves you. He has not forgotten you.

A Pastoral Prayer for You

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the person of Jesus Christ. I thank You that You did not stay distant in our pain, but that You came near to us in the flesh. I pray for the person reading this right now. If they are feeling lost, let them find their Way in Jesus. If they are confused by the noise of the world, let them find Truth in His Word. If they are feeling empty, let them find Life in His Spirit. May they feel Your overwhelming love and know that they are seen and valued. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Who Jesus Is

Is Jesus actually God? Yes, according to the Bible and traditional Christian teaching, Jesus is the second person of the Trinity. He is fully divine and co-eternal with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Scriptures like John 1:1 and Colossians 2:9 confirm His full deity.

Was Jesus a real historical person? Beyond the Bible, multiple non-Christian historical sources from the first and second centuries: including Roman historians like Tacitus and Jewish historians like Josephus: confirm that Jesus was a historical figure who lived in Judea and was executed under Pontius Pilate.

Why did Jesus have to die? The Bible teaches that "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). Because God is just, sin must be punished. Because God is love, He took that punishment upon Himself through Jesus. His death serves as a substitute for ours, allowing us to be forgiven and restored to a relationship with God.

What does the name "Christ" mean? "Christ" is not a last name; it is a title. It comes from the Greek word *Christos*, which translates the Hebrew word *Mashiach* (Messiah). It means "The Anointed One," referring to the King and Deliverer promised throughout the Old Testament.

How can I start a relationship with Jesus? Starting a relationship with Jesus begins with faith: trusting that He is who He said He is and that His work on the cross was for you. You can talk to God in prayer, tell Him you need His forgiveness, and ask Him to lead your life.
