Christian Living : Looking for Divine Healing? Here Are 5 Things You Should Know

Divine healing is a supernatural act of God that brings restoration to our physical, emotional, or spiritual lives through the power of the Holy Spirit. Grounded in Christ’s redemptive work, it is available to believers today as a testament to God’s mercy and His ultimate victory over sickness and death.

Scripture for Reflection

  • Exodus 15:26 (NKJV): "...For I am the Lord who heals you."

  • Isaiah 53:5 (NKJV): "But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed."

  • Matthew 8:16-17 (NKJV): "When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: 'He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.'"

  • James 5:14-15 (NKJV): "Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up."

Understanding the Heart of the Healer

I want to start by saying something very simple but very important: you are never forgotten, you are never alone, and you are deeply loved by God. If you’ve landed on this page because you or someone you love is hurting, please know that my heart is with you. We serve a God who isn't distant or disconnected from our pain. He is the Great Physician, and His desire for wholeness in your life is even greater than your own.

In our walk with Christ, the topic of divine healing can sometimes feel complex or even intimidating. You might have questions like, "Does God still heal today?" or "Why hasn't my healing manifested yet?" These are honest questions, and they deserve honest, biblical answers. As we explore these five truths, remember that the Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails. We look to the Word of God as our final authority, trusting that the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is active and moving among us right now.

1. Healing Is Part of God’s Nature and Name

One of the most beautiful things about God is that He reveals who He is through His names. In Exodus 15:26, He introduces Himself as *Jehovah-Rapha*, which literally means "The Lord who heals." This isn't just something He does; it's who He is. From the very beginning, God has been in the business of restoration.

When I look at the Old Testament, I see a God who cared about the physical well-being of His people just as much as their spiritual health. He provided manna, protected them from diseases, and promised that if they walked with Him, He would be their healer. This foundation is crucial because it tells us that healing isn't a "New Testament invention." It is a permanent part of God’s character. He remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. If He was the healer then, He is the healer now.

2. Healing Is Provided in the Atonement

This is a cornerstone of our faith. We believe that when Jesus went to the cross, He didn't just pay the price for our sins, though that is the greatest miracle of all. He also bore our sicknesses and carried our pains. When we read Isaiah 53:5, we see the prophetic promise: "By His stripes we are healed." This was confirmed in the New Testament when Peter looked back at the cross and said the same thing in 1 Peter 2:24.

I often tell people that healing is a "benefit" of the kingdom of God. Just as we receive forgiveness for our sins by faith, we can approach the throne of grace to ask for healing based on what Jesus has already finished. It’s not about us being "good enough" to deserve it; it’s about what He was "good enough" to provide for us. Because Jesus conquered sin and death, the root causes of sickness have been defeated. While we live in a fallen world where we still face battles, we stand on the ground of Christ's total victory.

3. The Power of Holy Spirit Baptism

When we talk about divine healing, we cannot ignore the person and work of the Holy Spirit. In the Book of Acts, we see the early church walking in incredible power. What changed? They were filled with the Holy Spirit. This experience, often called Holy Spirit Baptism, isn't just a theological term; it’s an empowerment for service and a gateway to the spiritual gifts.

Among those gifts, as listed in 1 Corinthians 12, are the "gifts of healings." Notice it's plural! The Holy Spirit distributes these gifts to the body of Christ so that we can minister to one another. I’ve seen that when we are sensitive to the Spirit’s leading, He often prompts us to pray for someone’s specific need. This is why we encourage every believer to seek the fullness of the Spirit. It’s not just for our own benefit, but so that we can be "conduits" of God's healing power to a world that is desperately hurting.

If you're looking for clean media to help your family understand the power of the Spirit or the history of the church, I always recommend checking out family-safe versions via VidAngel or "Enjoy Movies Your Way." It’s so important to keep our eyes and hearts focused on things that build our faith. And as you navigate the digital world looking for resources, don't forget the importance of online safety, tools like Bark and Covenant Eyes are great for keeping your family’s digital walk as healthy as your physical one.

4. The Role of Faith and God’s Sovereignty

I want to be very tender here. Sometimes, people are told that if they aren't healed, it’s because they don't have enough faith. I want to clear that up right now: God does not withhold healing based on a "faith meter." Faith is certainly a key that opens the door, Jesus often said, "Your faith has made you well", but healing ultimately depends on God’s mercy and His timing.

We see Jesus healing people who didn't even know who He was, and we see Him responding to the desperate faith of a mother or a centurion. Faith is simply trusting God with the outcome. It’s saying, "I know You can, and I trust You even while I wait." We must hold the tension of believing for a miracle while also submitting to God’s ultimate authority. He sees the beginning from the end, and His love for you is constant, whether the healing comes instantly, gradually, or through the wisdom He gives to doctors and medical professionals.

5. Healing Points to a Greater Reality

Every time someone is healed by the power of God, it’s like a "trailer" for a movie that is coming soon. Divine healing in this life is a temporary touch of the eternal. Even those Jesus raised from the dead eventually passed away again. So, why does He do it? He does it to show us that His Kingdom is breaking into our world. Every miracle is a signpost pointing toward the day when there will be no more pain, no more sorrow, and no more death.

Our ultimate healing is the resurrection. We look forward to the day when we will receive incorruptible bodies that will never feel the sting of disease again. Until then, we pray "Thy Kingdom come" and we ask for God’s healing touch as a witness to His goodness. When we pray for the sick, we are declaring that death and decay don't get the final word, Jesus does.

A Prayer for Your Wholeness

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the person reading this right now. You know their heart, You know their body, and You know the specific needs they are facing. I ask right now, in the mighty name of Jesus, for Your healing touch to manifest in their life. Lord, let Your Holy Spirit bring comfort where there is pain and peace where there is anxiety. We stand on the promise that by Your stripes, we are healed. Strengthen their faith and remind them today that they are never alone and deeply loved by You. Amen.
