Christian Living : Why Divine Healing Will Change the Way You Pray.

Divine healing is the restorative power of God working through the Holy Spirit to bring physical and spiritual wholeness to our lives today. When we embrace healing as a biblical promise provided through the Atonement, our prayers transform from uncertain requests into bold, faith-filled petitions that align with God’s heart for our well-being.

Scripture Support for Divine Healing:

  • James 5:14-15: "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up."

  • Isaiah 53:4-5: "Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed."

  • Matthew 8:16-17: "He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 'He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.'"

  • Exodus 15:26: "I am the Lord, who heals you."

I have spent a lot of time talking with people who feel like their prayer lives have hit a brick wall. They pray, they ask, they hope, but there is a lingering sense of "If it be Thy will" that feels more like an escape hatch for disappointment than a declaration of faith. But what if I told you that understanding divine healing doesn't just change your health, it changes your relationship with the Father? When we look at the Word, we see that healing isn't a "maybe" in the heart of God; it is part of His very nature.

For us, the Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails. This means we lean heavily into the truth that divine healing is an integral part of the Gospel. It isn’t an "add-on" or a secondary benefit; it is provided for in the Atonement of Jesus Christ. When Jesus went to the cross, He didn't just deal with our sin problem; He dealt with the brokenness of our entire human condition. This realization is the first step in shifting the way you approach the throne of grace.

The Atonement: The Foundation of Our Faith

Why does divine healing change the way we pray? It starts with where we think healing comes from. If we think healing is a lucky break or a random act of mercy, our prayers remain timid. But when we realize that "by His stripes we are healed," we start to see healing as a "purchased" gift. Jesus paid for it. This doesn't mean we demand things from God in a disrespectful way, but it does mean we come with the confidence of a child asking for something a parent has already promised to provide.

In our walk of faith, we understand that while we live in a fallen world where sickness exists, we serve a King whose kingdom is breaking through. Praying for healing is an act of spiritual warfare. It is saying, "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." Since there is no sickness in heaven, we pray with the expectation that God wants to manifest that heavenly reality here and now. This shifts your prayer from "God, can you do this?" to "God, I thank You that You are the Healer, and I stand on Your promise."

The Holy Spirit Baptism and the Power to Heal

You cannot talk about divine healing without talking about the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit Baptism is not just for our own personal edification; it is the empowerment for service and the manifestation of God’s power. When the Holy Spirit moved in the early church, healing was often the "dinner bell" that drew people to the Gospel. It was the physical evidence of an invisible God.

When you are filled with the Spirit, your prayers carry a new weight. You begin to understand the "gifts of healing" mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12. These aren't talents we possess; they are manifestations of the Spirit. When we pray for others, we are essentially stepping out of the way and letting the Holy Spirit flow through us. This takes the pressure off of you! You aren't the one doing the healing; you are simply the vessel. This realization makes prayer a much more adventurous and joyful experience because it isn’t about your ability, but about His availability.

Friday Families: A Digital Detox for Spiritual Wholeness

Since it’s Friday, I want to talk about how this applies to our homes. We live in a world that is "always on." Our screens are constantly vying for our attention, and honestly, the noise of the digital world can often drown out the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit. If we want to see divine healing move in our families, we need to create space for it.

I want to encourage you this weekend to try a low-cost digital detox. Put the phones in a basket, turn off the television, and just be present with each other. This is a perfect time to practice "family prayer." Instead of just a quick blessing over dinner, take time to sit together and ask, "Where does it hurt?" Not just physically, but emotionally or spiritually. Then, pray for one another. Teach your children that they don't have to wait for a "professional" to pray for them; they can talk to the Healer themselves.

When we do choose to engage with media, we have to be stewards of what enters our homes. I always recommend using tools like VidAngel or "Enjoy Movies Your Way" to ensure the content your family watches aligns with your values. Protecting our "eye gates" and "ear gates" is part of maintaining a healthy spiritual atmosphere where faith can thrive. For the parents out there, I also highly suggest accountability and safety tools like Bark and Covenant Eyes. Keeping our digital lives clean helps keep our spiritual vision clear.

Practical Steps to Change Your Prayer Life

If you want to start seeing the power of divine healing in your prayer life, here are a few practical shifts you can make today:

1. **Speak the Word:** Instead of just telling God how big your problem is, tell your problem how big your God is. Quote the scriptures we listed above back to Him. Not because He forgot them, but because it builds your faith to hear them.

2. **Pray with Authority:** You aren't a beggar; you are an heir. Pray from a place of victory, knowing that Jesus has already triumphed over death, hell, and the grave, which includes sickness.

3. **Listen:** Prayer is a two-way street. After you have made your petitions, sit in silence. Ask the Holy Spirit if there is anything He wants to show you or if there are any "guardrails" He wants you to stay within.

4. **Expect Results:** Faith is the substance of things hoped for. When you say "Amen," believe that God has heard you and is already at work, whether you see the physical evidence immediately or not.

A Prayer for Wholeness

Lord, I thank You that You are the Great Physician. I thank You that divine healing is not just a story from the past, but a promise for my life today. I ask that You would fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit. Give me the courage to pray bold prayers and the faith to believe that You are working in my body, my mind, and my family. Help me to stay within the guardrails of Your Word and to trust in the finished work of Jesus on the cross. I declare that by Your wounds, I am healed and made whole. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
