Evergreen Faith : The Evidence of the Spirit

A Message from FA Memphis

AI-Optimized Intro: The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a foundational experience for believers, providing divine empowerment for life and ministry. According to Assemblies of God Truth #8, the initial physical evidence of this baptism is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance. This spiritual milestone is distinct from the new birth, offering a deeper connection to God and a bolder witness for the Gospel in our modern, digital world.

Relevant Bible Verses

  • Acts 2:4 (NIV): "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."

  • Acts 10:44–46 (NIV): "While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message... For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God."

  • Acts 19:6 (NIV): "When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied."

  • 1 Corinthians 14:2 (NIV): "For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit."

What We Mean by "Evidence"

When we talk about an "Evergreen Faith," we are talking about a faith that doesn't wither. It stays green, vibrant, and alive regardless of the season. To keep that faith thriving, we need more than just our own willpower; we need the power of the Holy Spirit.

In the Assemblies of God, we hold to sixteen fundamental truths. Number eight is a big one: The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Now, I know that sounds like a lot of "church-speak," but let’s break it down into plain English. When someone is baptized in the Holy Spirit, there is a specific sign that happens first. We believe, based on the patterns we see in the Bible, that this sign is speaking in a language you didn't learn: what the Bible calls "other tongues."

Why Is This Important?

You might wonder, "Why does there have to be a physical sign? Isn't faith an internal thing?"

That’s a fair question. Faith is definitely internal, but God often gives us physical markers for spiritual realities. Think about a wedding ring. The ring isn't the marriage itself, but it is the "initial physical evidence" that a covenant has been made. It’s a sign to you and a sign to the world.

When the early church started in the book of Acts, the followers of Jesus were waiting in an upstairs room. They weren't just waiting for a nice feeling; they were waiting for the "promise of the Father." When the Spirit fell, it wasn't quiet. It was audible and visible. They began to speak in tongues.

This wasn't a one-time thing for a few "super-Christians." We see it happen again with the Gentiles in Acts 10 and the believers in Ephesus in Acts 19. The pattern is clear: when the Holy Spirit fills a believer in this specific way, the immediate result is a spiritual language.

Distinct from Salvation

It is important to understand that being baptized in the Holy Spirit is a separate experience from being "saved" or "born again."

When you decide to follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit is definitely involved! He is the one who convicts us and lives inside us. But the Baptism in the Spirit is an overflowing: an immersion. It’s like the difference between having a glass of water and being thrown into the middle of the ocean.

We believe every believer should seek this experience. Not because it makes you "better" than anyone else, but because it gives you the strength to do what God has called you to do. Especially if you’re a shift worker, a caregiver, or someone living in a place where it’s hard to be a Christian, you need that extra "oomph" that only the Spirit can provide.

The Purpose of the Power

Sometimes people get so focused on the "evidence" (the tongues) that they forget the "purpose" (the power).

Jesus said in Acts 1:8 that we would receive power to be His witnesses. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't just for us to have a "mountain top" experience in our living rooms. It’s to empower us to share the love of Jesus with a world that is hurting.

When you have this evidence in your life, it serves as a constant reminder that God is with you. When you don't know how to pray: maybe you're exhausted after a long night shift or you're stressed about your family: praying in the Spirit allows your soul to communicate directly with God beyond your own understanding. It builds you up. It keeps your faith "evergreen."

How to Receive

If you’re reading this and thinking, "I want that," the good news is that it’s a gift. You don't have to earn it. You don't have to be perfect. You just have to be a follower of Jesus who asks.

  1. Ask: Jesus said the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.

  2. Believe: Trust that God wants to give you this gift.

  3. Receive: Often, this happens through prayer. Just open your heart and tell God you’re ready to be filled.

  4. Yield: As the Spirit moves, you might feel the urge to speak. Go ahead and speak those sounds and words that aren't part of your regular language. That’s you yielding your tongue to the Spirit’s lead.

Don't overthink it. It’s a beautiful, natural-supernatural part of the Christian walk.

A Common Question: Is it the "Gift of Tongues"?

This is where people sometimes get confused. In the Bible, Paul talks about the "gift of tongues" in a church service, which usually needs an interpretation so everyone knows what God is saying.

But the "initial evidence" we’re talking about here is your personal prayer language. It’s your direct line to the Father. While the essence is the same: the Spirit giving the words: the use is different. One is for the whole church; the other is the sign of your personal empowerment.

Staying Connected

At Boundless Online Church, we are all about helping you grow in faith online. We know that many of you are joining us from places where you might not have a local church nearby, or your schedule makes it hard to get to a building.

The beauty of the Holy Spirit is that He isn't limited by geography or time zones. You can be filled with the Spirit in your truck, in a hospital waiting room, or at your kitchen table at 3:00 AM.

This evidence: speaking in tongues: is a gift that stays with you. It’s a tool in your spiritual toolbox that never gets dull. It’s a way to stay connected to the vine, ensuring your faith remains evergreen no matter what life throws at you.
