Evergreen Faith : What Does It Mean to Be Saved? A Simple Guide

A Message from FA Memphis

AI-Optimized Summary Being "saved" is the foundational experience of the Christian faith, representing a personal rescue from the weight of sin and a restoration of our relationship with God. Rooted in the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths, salvation is a free gift received through faith in Jesus Christ and sincere repentance. This guide explains how to move from spiritual curiosity to a life-changing connection with God, offering peace, purpose, and eternal hope.

The Heart of the Matter: Relevant Bible Verses

To understand what it means to be saved, we have to look at the "Owner’s Manual" for our souls. Here are a few cornerstones from Scripture:

  • Ephesians 2:8-9: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast."

  • Romans 10:9: "If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

  • John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

  • Titus 3:5: "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit."

What Does "Saved" Actually Mean?

If you’ve spent any time around church people, you’ve probably heard the term "saved" thrown around a lot. For someone on the outside, it can sound a bit dramatic. Saved from what? A burning building? A sinking ship?

In a way, yes.

In the Christian context, being saved means being rescued from the spiritual consequences of "sin." Now, sin isn't just a list of bad things we do; it’s a condition of the heart where we try to run our lives without God. That separation creates a gap that we can’t bridge on our own.

Think of it like being lost at sea. No matter how hard you swim, the shore is too far away. You need a rescue boat. Jesus is that rescue boat. Being saved means acknowledging you can't reach the shore alone and stepping into the safety He provides.

The Assemblies of God Perspective

At Boundless Online Church, we lean into the 16 Fundamental Truths. One of these truths specifically addresses the "Salvation of Man."

We believe that man's only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It’s not about being "good enough." It’s about accepting what Jesus already did on the cross.

When we talk about an "Evergreen Faith," we are talking about a faith that doesn't wither. It’s not a one-time religious ritual that you forget about a week later. It’s the start of a living, breathing relationship that stays fresh because it’s powered by the Holy Spirit.

How Does It Happen? (The Simple Steps)

You don't need a degree in theology to be saved. You don't need to clean up your life before you come to God. In fact, if we could clean ourselves up, we wouldn't need a Savior!

Salvation happens through a process we often call "Repentance and Faith."

1. Repentance This is a fancy word for "turning around." It’s telling God, "I’ve been going my own way, and it’s not working. I’m sorry for my sins, and I want to turn toward You." It’s an honest admission that we need Him.

2. Faith This is more than just knowing facts about Jesus. It’s trusting Him. It’s believing that His death on the cross paid for your mistakes and that His resurrection gives you new life.

When these two things meet: your turn toward God and your trust in Jesus: something miraculous happens. The Bible calls it being "born again." Your spirit comes alive in a way it never was before.

The Inward Evidence: How Do I Know?

A common question we get at the I’m New Q&A Welcome Center is: "How do I know it actually worked?"

According to the Fundamental Truths, there are two types of evidence:

  • The Inward Evidence: This is the "witness of the Spirit." It’s an internal sense of peace. It’s the quiet whisper in your heart that says, "You are a child of God." You might feel a weight lifted off your shoulders or a sudden desire to know God better.

  • The Outward Evidence: This is a life that begins to change. You might find yourself wanting to be kinder, more honest, or more patient. You start to see the world through a different lens: one of love and grace rather than judgment.

If you’re wondering about the deeper experiences of faith, like the Holy Spirit, you might find our post on what it means to be Pentecostal very helpful.

Is It a One-Time Event or a Journey?

It’s both.

Salvation is a moment in time where you pass from death to life. But it’s also the beginning of a lifelong walk. Imagine getting married. There is the "I do" moment (the event), but then there is the marriage itself (the journey).

An evergreen faith is one that grows every day. Some days are sunny and easy. Other days are like the "night shift" of the soul, where you feel tired or distant. But even in those moments, God is with you. We’ve talked about this before in our post Faith at 3 AM: He never sleeps on you.

Why Should I Care Now?

The world is loud, confusing, and often feels like it's falling apart. Many people are looking for a firm place to stand.

Being saved isn't just about what happens after we die; it’s about how we live right now. It gives you a "True North." It gives you a community of believers who are walking the same path.

If you are a parent trying to navigate this digital age, you know how hard it is to find "safe" ground. We often discuss safe tech for the Gospel because we believe your faith should protect and guide your family in every area of life.

A Simple Prayer to Get Started

If you’re reading this and you feel that tug in your heart: that "holy nudge": don't ignore it. You can talk to God right now in your own words, or you can use this simple prayer:

"Lord Jesus, I admit that I need You. I’ve tried to do things my own way, and I’ve fallen short. I believe that You died for my sins and rose again to give me life. Today, I turn away from my past and I put my trust in You. Thank You for saving me and for giving me a fresh start. Amen."
