Evergreen Faith : What Does it Mean to Have a 'New Identity' in Christ?

A Message from FA Memphis

Having a 'new identity' in Christ means your old self is gone and you are now a new creation, defined by God's love and grace rather than your past (2 Corinthians 5:17). This spiritual transformation signifies that you are reconciled to God, adopted as His child, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live with hope, leaving behind the weight of previous mistakes to embrace a purposeful future.

Bible Verses for Reflection

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"

  • Galatians 2:20: "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

  • 1 Peter 2:9: "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."

  • Ephesians 2:10: "For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

  • Romans 6:6: "For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin."

Pastoral Insight: The Miracle of a Fresh Start

Have you ever wished you could just hit a "reset" button on your life?

We all have parts of our story we’d rather skip over: mistakes we’ve made, words we regret, or labels that others have placed on us. In our world today, identity is often tied to what we do, how much we make, or what our past looks like. But the Gospel offers us something radically different.

When we talk about a "new identity" in Christ, we aren’t talking about a self-help makeover or a New Year’s resolution. We are talking about a total spiritual transformation.

The Old is Gone

The first part of finding your identity in Jesus is understanding that the "old you" is no longer the one in charge.

Before we meet Christ, our identity is often shaped by our "flesh": our natural inclinations, our mistakes, and our separation from God. This old identity is heavy. It carries the weight of shame and the burden of trying to prove our worth.

But the Bible tells us that when we put our faith in Jesus, that old self was crucified with Him. It sounds intense, because it is! It means the "you" that was defined by sin and failure is dead and buried. You don't have to carry the labels of your past anymore. Whether you are struggling with things you've done or things that were done to you, there is a path to overcoming shame with God’s grace.

You Are a New Creation

If the old is gone, what takes its place?

God doesn’t just patch up your old life; He gives you a brand new one. You become a "new creation." In the Greek language used in the New Testament, this word for "new" doesn't just mean "new in time" (like a new car model), it means "new in nature." You are a completely different kind of being.

Your identity is now rooted in what Jesus did on the cross, not in what you have done. You are forgiven, not because you’ve made up for your mistakes, but because He paid the debt. If you are struggling to believe that you are truly wiped clean, we invite you to look into the assurance of forgiveness.

Adopted Into the Family

One of the most beautiful parts of this new identity is your status. You aren't just a "forgiven sinner" who is allowed to hang around the edges of the Kingdom. You are a child of God.

In the Roman world where the New Testament was written, adoption was a powerful legal act. An adopted child was given all the rights, privileges, and the name of the father, just as if they had been born into the family.

When you are in Christ, God is your Father. You have a seat at the table. You are "God’s special possession." This means your value isn't based on your performance: it's based on your Father’s love.

Practical Encouragement: How to Walk in Your New Identity

Knowing you have a new identity is one thing; living it out on a Tuesday afternoon is another. Here are a few ways to start embracing who you really are in Jesus:

1. Change Your Self-Talk

When those old thoughts of "I'm a failure" or "I'll never change" creep in, replace them with the truth of Scripture. Instead of saying "I am a mess," say "I am a new creation in Christ." This isn't just "positive thinking": it's aligning your mind with the reality of what God has already done.

2. Lean into the Holy Spirit

You aren't expected to live this new life on your own strength. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you! This is what we call Spirit-empowered living. If you want to learn more about how the Spirit helps us navigate this new life, check out our guide on the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

3. Find Your Community

Identity is hard to maintain in isolation. We need other people to remind us who we are when we forget. Whether you are here in Memphis or joining us from around the world, getting plugged into a group is essential. For our local friends, we always say that Wednesday night family groups are a great place to start growing together.

4. Focus on Purpose

You were "created in Christ Jesus to do good works." Your new identity comes with a new mission. God has uniquely gifted you to serve others and share His love. When you start focusing on the "good works" God has for you, the old habits and identities start to lose their grip.

Why Does This Matter?

At Boundless Online Church, we see people every day who are exhausted from trying to build an identity on shifting sand. Careers change, relationships end, and health can fade. If your identity is built on those things, you’ll always be one crisis away from an identity crisis.

But when your identity is hidden in Christ, it is secure. It is "evergreen." It doesn't wither when life gets hard because it isn't based on you: it's based on the unshakeable nature of God.

You are loved. You are chosen. You are forgiven. You are new.

A Prayer for Your New Journey

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of a new life. I am so grateful that my past does not define me and that my mistakes do not have the final say. Help me to truly believe that I am a new creation in Christ. When the old lies of shame and unworthiness try to pull me back, remind me that I am Your child. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so I can walk in the purpose You have for me. Amen.
