Faith Questions: What If I’m Too Ashamed to Come Back to God?

There is a specific kind of silence that settles in when you feel like you’ve wandered too far. It isn't a peaceful silence. It is heavy, loud with the echoes of "what if" and "if only." Maybe you grew up in the church and knew the songs by heart, but life took a turn you didn't expect. Maybe you made a series of choices that felt right at the time, but left you feeling hollow. Now, you’re standing on the outside looking in, wondering if the door is even still unlocked. The most common question we hear at Boundless Online Church isn't about complex theology or the end times; it’s the quiet, pained whisper: What if I’m just too ashamed to come back to God?
If you are feeling that weight today, I want you to take a deep breath. Shame is a powerful emotion, but it is a terrible compass. It tells you to hide when you need to be found. It tells you that you are your mistakes, rather than a person who made mistakes. But the truth of the Gospel, the core of everything we believe as a fellowship aligned with the Assemblies of God, is that grace was specifically designed for people who feel exactly like you do right now. Grace isn't a reward for the people who stayed; it’s a lifeline for the ones who left.

When we talk about shame, we often confuse it with guilt. Guilt says, "I did something bad."
Guilt can actually be helpful because it nudges us to make things right. But shame is different. Shame says, "I am bad." It attacks your identity. It convinces you that you’ve fundamentally changed into something God no longer wants to associate with. You might feel like a "used" version of yourself, or like you’re carrying a stain that won’t come out. This is the primary weapon the enemy uses to keep you isolated. If he can convince you that God is angry, disgusted, or disappointed beyond repair, he can keep you from the very source of healing you need.
Think about the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15. We often focus on the son’s rebellion, the way he took his inheritance and wasted it on "riotous living." But look closely at his journey home. He didn't come back with a heart full of confidence. He came back with a rehearsed speech, hoping he could just be a hired servant. He was covered in the smell of the pigpen. He was likely rehearsing his apologies with every step, convinced he had lost his place in the family. He was operating out of shame. He thought he had to negotiate his way back into his father’s good graces.
But the Bible tells us that while the son was still "a long way off," his father saw him. The father didn't wait on the porch with his arms crossed, waiting for an explanation. He didn't demand to see a list of everywhere the son had been. Instead, he ran. In that culture, a middle-aged man running was considered undignified, but the father didn't care about his dignity. He cared about his son. He threw his arms around the boy while he was still covered in the filth of the world. That is the heart of God for you today. He isn't waiting for you to get cleaned up before He welcomes you. His embrace is what cleans you up.
At Boundless Online Church, we hold tightly to the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. One of the most important ones is Truth #5: The Salvation of Man. It reminds us that salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, being justified by grace through faith, we become heirs of God. Notice that it doesn't say we become heirs by our own perfection. It says we are justified by grace. This means that when you come to God, He doesn't see the "pigpen" version of you. He sees the righteousness of His Son, Jesus.

You might be reading this in the middle of a night shift, or perhaps you’re a caregiver who feels completely drained and disconnected from spiritual life. Maybe you’re in a place where attending a physical church feels impossible or even frightening because of the judgment you fear. This is why we are here. Whether you are in a high-rise apartment in a busy city or a quiet home in a rural town, God’s presence is not limited by your location or your past. He is as close as the mention of His name.
One of the hurdles to coming back is the feeling that we need to "fix" ourselves first. We think we need to stop the bad habits, fix the relationship, or get our thoughts in order before we can pray. But that’s like saying you need to get healthy before you go to the doctor. Jesus said He didn't come for the healthy, but for the sick. If you’re struggling with something today, whether it’s an addiction, a secret struggle, or just a general sense of being lost, bring that struggle with you. Don't leave it at the door. God wants the real you, not the "polished" version you think He requires.
Coming back to God is often simpler than we make it. It starts with a conversation. You don't need a formal prayer or a specific set of words. You can simply say, "God, I’m here, and I’m hurting. I’ve made a mess of things, and I don't know how to fix it. Please help me." This is the beginning of repentance. Repentance isn't just about saying sorry; it's about turning around. It’s deciding that you’re tired of walking away and you’re ready to walk toward the Light.
We also believe in the power of the Holy Spirit to empower us (Truth #7). When you come back to God, you aren't expected to live this new life on your own strength. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in you to give you the power to overcome shame, to break old cycles, and to walk in a new direction. You are not alone in this. You have a global family of believers who are rooting for you, many of whom have walked the same path of return that you are on right now.
If you have been holding back because of shame, let today be the day that shame loses its grip. God’s grace is bigger than your biggest mistake. His mercy is new every single morning. It doesn't matter how many times you’ve fallen; what matters is that you’re looking up. There is no "too far" when it comes to the reach of the Cross. Jesus paid the price for every single thing that is making you feel ashamed right now. He did the work so that you could have the relationship.
We invite you to take a step toward faith today. You don't have to have all the answers. You don't have to know exactly what the future looks like. You just have to be willing to be loved by a Father who has never stopped looking for you on the horizon. If you’re ready to start over, we would love to walk with you. You can join us for a Sunday service online, join a small group where you can be yourself, or simply reach out for prayer. Your story isn't over. In fact, this might be the most beautiful chapter yet: the one where you finally realize just how much you are loved.
