Life Questions: Is Your Degree Failing? The New Federal Rule Quietly Targeting Christian Education

No, your degree is not failing, but a new federal rule may treat some Christian, ministry-minded, and service-focused programs as if they are. By measuring a degree’s value mainly through post-graduation earnings, the government risks punishing callings built on faithfulness, service, and long-term impact instead of high starting salaries.

Bible Verses

"Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established." – Proverbs 16:3

"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ." – Colossians 3:23

"For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?" – Mark 8:36

"The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of hosts." – Haggai 2:8

"His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’" – Matthew 25:23

The Hidden Shift in Higher Education

For decades, the value of a college degree was measured by wisdom, character, and specialized knowledge. Today, the conversation is shifting toward a purely economic metric. The Department of Education has introduced the Financial Value Transparency (FVT) and Gainful Employment (GE) rules. While these rules aim to protect students from predatory schools, they are quietly creating an "existential threat" for Christian higher education and service-oriented degrees.

The rule is simple but stark: if graduates of a specific program do not earn more than a typical high school graduate in their state, that program is labeled a "failure." For students, this could eventually mean losing access to federal financial aid for those specific majors.

But here is the problem: many of the most vital roles in our society, pastors, social workers, teachers, and missionaries, do not start with high salaries. If we measure the "value" of a degree only by the size of the paycheck, we risk devaluing the very callings that hold our communities together.

Education Beyond the Paycheck

Why Students and Families Should Care

If you are a student or a parent, this is not just a policy headline. It affects real decisions about debt, calling, and access to education.

Whether you are considering a public university, a private college, or a Christian school, these regulations change the landscape of financial planning. Schools and programs are now under a microscope regarding their "debt-to-earnings" ratios.

1. The "Service Gap" Is Real Our communities depend on people who follow a calling rather than a pure "ROI" Return on Investment. If a student chooses a degree in religious studies, social work, education, or ministry, their starting salary might not immediately skyrocket. Under the new rule, that program could be flagged, even if that student is doing exactly what God called them to do.

2. Transparency vs. Penalization Transparency is a good thing. Students should know if a degree will leave them with high debt and low income. However, the federal rule treats "earnings" as the main definition of "value." For a Christian student with a biblical worldview, value is found in stewardship and obedience to God, not just a tax bracket.

3. The Risk to Minority and First-Generation Students Research shows that earnings-based metrics often disproportionately affect programs serving minority and first-generation students. We need to make sure the path to a degree remains open to everyone, regardless of whether their career choice is in high-finance or high-impact ministry.

5 Things the Federal Rule Gets Wrong About Value

When we look at education through the lens of faith, we see a much bigger picture than the Department of Education’s spreadsheets.

  • Calling vs. Compensation: A paycheck is a tool, but a calling is a mission. God often calls people to "low-earning" fields that have high eternal impact.

  • The Wisdom Factor: Education is about learning how to think and how to live. You can't put a dollar sign on a transformed mind.

  • Local Labor Markets: The rule often ignores that earnings look different from one place to another. A "failing" salary in one location may be a sustainable salary in another.

  • Temporal vs. Eternal: Secular rules focus on the next four years. A biblical worldview focuses on the next forty years and eternity.

  • The Definition of Failure: A program isn't a failure if it produces a faithful, hardworking citizen who serves their neighbor, even if they aren't in the top tax bracket.

Stewardship Checklist for Students

How to Navigate the New Rules

As a student or parent, you don't need to panic, but you do need to be prepared. Stewardship is a biblical principle. We are called to be wise with the resources God gives us, including our education and our finances.

1. Research the Data Use the federal College Scorecard to look at the median earnings for your specific major at the University of Memphis or Rhodes College. Knowledge is power. If the debt-to-income ratio looks dangerous, ask the school how they are addressing the new federal standards.

2. Seek Godly Counsel Don't pick a major based on a federal "value" score, but also don't ignore the reality of debt. Pray for wisdom. Ask mentors in your church or here at Boundless Online Church for guidance on balancing your calling with financial responsibility.

3. Look for "Work-College" Models and Scholarships Look for scholarships and work-study programs that help reduce the need for federal loans. The less debt you take on, the less the "earnings test" matters for your personal freedom.

4. Focus on "Double Value" Choose programs that offer both spiritual growth and practical skills. A degree that teaches you how to serve and how to solve problems will always have value, regardless of what a government label says.

Better Life Takeaways

  • Your worth is not your salary. The government may label a program a "failure" based on money, but God labels you a success based on faithfulness.

  • Transparency is a tool, not a trap. Use the data to make smart decisions, but don't let it dictate your calling.

  • Your community needs you. Communities thrive when people pursue education to make a difference, not just a paycheck.

  • Stewardship is spiritual. Managing your student loans and choosing your path wisely is an act of worship.

  • God is your provider. No federal rule can stop God from providing for those who follow His lead.

A Prayer for Students and Families

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of education and the opportunity to grow in wisdom. We pray for every student and family navigating these new regulations. Give them clarity of mind to choose the right path and a heart that seeks Your calling above all else. We pray for the administrators of Christian institutions, that they would have the courage to stand for truth and value that goes beyond a paycheck. We trust You with our futures and our finances. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
