The Boundless Daily: Day 4 : Why Is the World So Broken? (Global Micro-Study)

You've probably asked it yourself.
Maybe late at night during your shift when everything's quiet.
Or while sitting beside a hospital bed.
Or when the news shows another disaster, another tragedy, another heartbreak.
Why is life so hard?
Why do bad things happen?
Why does the world feel so... broken?
You're not alone in asking. And you're not wrong for wondering.
The world is broken. And there's a reason why.
The Beginning of Brokenness
Let's go back to the very beginning.
In Genesis 1 and 2, God creates a perfect world. Everything works the way it's supposed to. There's no sickness. No death. No suffering. No fear. No shame.
Adam and Eve live in the Garden of Eden in perfect relationship with God, with each other, and with creation.
It's the way things were meant to be.
But then Genesis 3 happens.

God gives Adam and Eve one simple boundary: don't eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It's not a cruel restriction: it's a loving boundary that protects the relationship.
But the serpent (Satan) plants a question in their minds: "Did God really say that? Does He really have your best interest at heart?"
And they choose to doubt God's goodness.
They choose independence over trust.
They eat the fruit.
And everything changes.
What the Fall Actually Broke
When Adam and Eve sinned, it wasn't just a personal mistake. It was cosmic rebellion that fractured the entire created order.
Here's what broke:
1. Our relationship with God
Suddenly, Adam and Eve hide from God. They feel shame. They're afraid. The intimacy is gone. Sin creates separation between us and our Creator.
2. Our relationship with each other
Immediately, blame starts. Adam blames Eve. Eve blames the serpent. Trust shatters. Conflict begins. You see it in the very next chapter when Cain kills Abel.
3. Our relationship with ourselves
Shame enters the human experience. Self-hatred. Guilt. Anxiety. Depression. The war inside us begins.
4. Our relationship with creation
The ground is cursed. Work becomes toil. Childbirth brings pain. Thorns and thistles grow. Nature itself groans under the weight of sin.
5. Death enters the world
"The wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). Physical death. Spiritual death. Relational death. Death in every form.
This is called the Fall: and it's Assemblies of God Fundamental Truth #4.

Why This Matters for Your Life Right Now
You might be reading this on a break from a night shift, exhausted and wondering if you can make it through another week.
Or you're caring for someone you love who's sick, and you're asking God why.
Or you're living somewhere dangerous, where following Jesus could cost you everything.
Or you're disabled and frustrated by a body that doesn't work the way you wish it would.
The Fall explains the "why."
It's not that God is punishing you personally.
It's not that you've done something to deserve this specific hardship.
It's that we live in a world that's been broken by sin: and the effects touch every human life.
The meaning of suffering isn't that God is absent or uncaring.
It's that sin has consequences that ripple through all creation.
But here's the hope: suffering isn't the end of the story.
The Brokenness Points to Our Need
Here's what's beautiful about understanding the Fall:
It shows us that we can't fix ourselves.
We can't heal the world on our own.
We can't undo the curse.
We can't bridge the gap between us and God through good behavior or positive thinking.
We need a Savior.
And that's exactly what God provides.
Romans 5:12 says, "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned."
But Romans 5:17-18 continues: "For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people."
Jesus is the second Adam.
Where Adam failed, Jesus succeeded.
Where Adam brought death, Jesus brings life.
Where Adam brought separation, Jesus brings reconciliation.

There Is Hope for You
If you're reading this and your life feels impossibly hard right now, hear this:
There is hope for you.
The brokenness you feel: whether it's physical pain, emotional exhaustion, relational conflict, or spiritual emptiness: is real.
But it's not the final word.
Jesus came to heal what the Fall destroyed.
He came to restore our relationship with God.
He came to offer forgiveness, peace, purpose, and eternal life.
He came to defeat death itself.
And one day, He's coming back to make all things new.
Revelation 21:4 promises: "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
What You Can Do Today
1. Acknowledge the reality
Don't pretend the world isn't broken. Don't spiritualize away real pain. It's okay to name the hard things.
2. Understand the source
The brokenness isn't God's fault: it's the result of sin entering the world. God is working to restore what's been lost.
3. Turn to the Savior
Jesus is the answer to the brokenness. He offers forgiveness for sin, healing for the heart, and hope for the future.
If you've never given your life to Jesus, today can be that day. You can talk to Him right now: just tell Him you believe He died for your sins and rose again, and ask Him to be your Savior.
4. Trust His plan
Even when you can't see the full picture, God is working. He's making a way through the brokenness.
5. Hold onto hope
This broken world isn't forever. Jesus is coming back. And when He does, everything sad will come untrue.

You're Not Alone
If you're working the night shift and reading this by the glow of a screen, you're not forgotten.
If you're caring for someone and feeling exhausted, you're not overlooked.
If you're disabled and frustrated, you're not less valuable.
If you're in a place where it's dangerous to follow Jesus, you're not abandoned.
God sees you.
He knows your name.
He cares about your struggles.
And He sent His Son to rescue you from the very brokenness you're experiencing.
The world is broken: but Jesus is the healer.
And that changes everything.
