A Message from FA Memphis
The Lake of Fire represents the final judgment in Assemblies of God theology, specifically outlined in Fundamental Truth #15. It is the ultimate, eternal separation from God for those who reject His grace. While a sobering reality, this teaching highlights God's perfect justice and the incredible value of salvation through Jesus Christ. Understanding this truth underscores the urgency of the Gospel and God’s desire for all to find eternal life.
The Word of Truth
The concept of the Lake of Fire isn't a human invention; it is a biblical reality described in the final movements of God’s redemptive plan. Here are the foundational scriptures:
Revelation 20:11-15 (NIV)
"Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books... Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire."
Matthew 25:41 (NIV)
"Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.’"
Revelation 21:8 (NIV)
"But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars: they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."
Understanding the Final Judgment
When we talk about the Lake of Fire, we are discussing what the Bible calls "The Second Death."
It is a topic that many people find difficult to process. In our modern world, we prefer to focus on God’s love, His mercy, and His kindness. And we should! Those are central to His character. But to truly appreciate the depth of His love, we have to understand the reality of His justice.
In the Assemblies of God, Fundamental Truth #15 teaches that there will be a final judgment. This is the moment where every life is accounted for. It is the ultimate "making things right." For those who have lived through injustice, pain, and the brokenness of this world, there is a certain comfort in knowing that God is a righteous Judge who does not let evil go unanswered.

Why a "Lake of Fire"?
The imagery of a lake of fire is used to describe a place of eternal punishment and separation. It is important to remember that, according to Jesus in Matthew 25, this place was originally "prepared for the devil and his angels."
God’s original intent for humanity was never destruction. We were created for fellowship, for garden-walking, and for eternal life with Him. However, because God gives us the freedom to choose, He also respects our choice if we choose to live apart from Him. The Lake of Fire is the ultimate destination for those who have consistently and finally rejected the life and grace God offers.
At Boundless Online Church, we often talk about how God’s goodness is present even when things feel shattered. If you are struggling with the concept of a "good God" allowing such a place to exist, you might find some perspective in our post on Where is God's goodness when Memphis feels shattered.
The Great White Throne
The Bible describes a scene where a Great White Throne is set. This isn't a courtroom where someone might get off on a technicality. It is a place of absolute light and truth.
The "books" are opened. These books represent the records of our lives: our actions, our thoughts, and our hearts. But then, there is "another book." This is the Book of Life.
The distinction is vital. Our own records, no matter how hard we try to be "good people," will always fall short of the perfect holiness of God. We all have moments we aren't proud of. We all have "the record" of our mistakes.
The Book of Life, however, is the record of those who have been redeemed. Their names are written there not because they were perfect, but because they accepted the perfection of Jesus. When we believe in Him, our debt is paid, and our names are recorded in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

A Message of Urgency, Not Fear
Some might wonder why we still teach this in 2026. Isn't it a bit "old-fashioned"?
The truth is that the reality of the Lake of Fire gives weight to our lives. It means that our choices matter. It means that the way we treat people matters. Most importantly, it means that the offer of salvation is the most important news in the world.
If there were no danger, there would be no need for a Savior.
Because we know the reality of the final judgment, we are motivated by love and compassion to share the hope of Jesus with everyone we meet. This isn't about scaring people into heaven; it’s about showing them the exit sign from a path that leads to destruction. It’s about the "kindest spark" of grace that can change a heart forever. You can read more about that heart-change in The Kindest Spark.
The Welcoming Door
The most beautiful part of this heavy topic is that the door to life is wide open right now.
God is "not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). The existence of the Lake of Fire should never be viewed apart from the existence of the Cross. Jesus took the judgment we deserved upon Himself so that we would never have to experience the second death.
If you are a seeker, a shift worker looking for peace in the middle of the night, or someone who feels like they've made too many mistakes for the Book of Life: know this: your story isn't over. As long as there is breath in your lungs, you can turn toward the Light.
We invite you to explore what it means to belong to a community of faith that stands on these truths. You can learn more about our beliefs and our community in our Assemblies of God Membership 101 post.

Pastoral Insight
We know this is a "hard saying." It’s a doctrine that requires a lot of prayer and reflection. But remember, the God who judges is the same God who wept at the grave of Lazarus. He is the same God who reached out His hand to Peter in the storm.
His judgment is an extension of His holiness. If He were not holy, He would not care about sin. If He did not care about sin, He would not be good. Because He is good, He must deal with evil once and for all.
Our hope is not in our ability to escape, but in the One who rescued us. We live in a world that often feels like it's on fire: with conflict, crime, and chaos. But we have a promise of a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness dwells. The Lake of Fire is the final removal of everything that hurts, harms, and destroys.
A Prayer for Peace and Assurance
Heavenly Father, we come to You with humble hearts. We acknowledge that You are the Holy Judge of all the earth, and we thank You for Your perfect justice. But Lord, we thank You even more for Your perfect mercy. We thank You that through Jesus Christ, our names can be written in the Book of Life. We pray for anyone reading this who feels fear or uncertainty. Let Your Spirit bring them peace and the assurance of salvation. Help us to live with an urgency to share Your love with a world that needs it so desperately. Amen.
