Evergreen Faith : Understanding the Fall of Man

A Message from FA Memphis

The Fall of Man, the third Fundamental Truth of the Assemblies of God, explains why a world created by a good God experiences suffering and sin. Originally created in God’s image, humanity chose voluntary transgression, leading to spiritual and physical death. Understanding the Fall is essential to grasping our need for redemption through Jesus Christ and the restoration of our relationship with the Creator.

Bible Verses

Genesis 1:26-27 (NIV)

"Then God said, 'Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.' So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."

Genesis 3:6 (NIV)

"When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it."

Romans 5:12 (NIV)

"Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned."

Explanation

Ever look at the world and think, "This isn't how it's supposed to be"?

Whether it’s the news cycle, a personal heartbreak, or just that nagging feeling that something is missing, we all recognize that the world is a bit broken. In our series on the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, we have to look at the "why" behind that brokenness. We call it "The Fall of Man."

It’s not the happiest topic, I know. But you can’t fully appreciate the sunrise of salvation until you understand the darkness of the Fall.

The Original Design: Created for Connection

Before we talk about the "Fall," we have to talk about the height from which we fell.

God didn't create humans because He was lonely or bored. He created us in His own image. That doesn't mean we look like Him physically (God is Spirit), but it means we were designed with a capacity for relationship, creativity, morality, and authority. We were the crown of His creation.

In the beginning, everything was "very good." There was no sickness, no shame, and, most importantly, no distance between God and man. We walked with Him. We were designed for constant, vibrant connection with the Father.

The Choice: The Heart of the Matter

So, what happened? If God is all-powerful, why did He let things go south?

It comes down to love. Real love requires a choice. If you program a robot to say "I love you," it doesn't mean anything because the robot has no choice. God gave Adam and Eve free will. He gave them a beautiful garden and one simple boundary: do not eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

That tree wasn't a trap; it was a choice. It was the opportunity for humanity to say, "God, I trust Your definition of what is good more than my own."

Unfortunately, as we see in Genesis 3, humanity chose differently. Influenced by the tempter, Adam and Eve decided they wanted to be their own gods. They took the fruit. This wasn't just a snack-time mistake; it was a voluntary transgression. It was a rebellion against the heart of God.

The Consequence: Death and Separation

The Assemblies of God doctrine specifically notes that because of this choice, humanity incurred both physical and spiritual death.

Physical death is something we see every day. Our bodies wear out. We face illness. We face the reality of the grave. This was never God’s original plan for us, but it became a reality once sin entered the environment.

Spiritual death is even more serious. It’s separation. The moment Adam and Eve sinned, they hid. They felt shame. The perfect, open-air relationship with God was severed. Sin is like a spiritual "blackout" that cuts us off from the source of life.

Because we are all descendants of Adam, we inherit this "sin nature." It’s why we don't have to teach a toddler how to be selfish; it’s built-in. We are born into a world that is fundamentally disconnected from its Creator.

Why This Matters Today

You might be thinking, "That’s a lot of heavy theology, Layne. How does this help me on a Tuesday morning?"

Understanding the Fall helps us in three major ways:

  1. It explains the "Why": It gives us a framework for understanding why bad things happen to good people and why we struggle with our own character. It’s not that God is mean; it’s that we are living in a fallen world.

  2. It levels the playing field: None of us are "better" than anyone else. Romans 3:23 tells us that all have sinned. We are all in the same boat, needing the same rescue.

  3. It makes Jesus the Hero: If we weren't truly "fallen," we wouldn't truly need a Savior. We’d just need a "life coach" or a "better philosophy." But because we are spiritually dead, we need someone who can bring the dead back to life.

The Fall is the "bad news" that makes the "Good News" (the Gospel) so incredible. God didn't leave us in the dirt. Even in the Garden, the moment they fell, God was already promising a way back (Genesis 3:15).

Finding Your Way Back

If you feel distant from God today, please know that it isn’t because He moved. The separation caused by the Fall was bridged by Jesus. You don't have to stay in a state of spiritual death. You can choose to walk in the "Evergreen Faith" that restores what was lost in the Garden.

We talk about this a lot on our Boundless Podcast. If you're wrestling with questions about why the world is the way it is, or how to find peace in the middle of the mess, I’d love for you to join the conversation there.

You can also check out our Sunday Sermons to see how we apply these truths to our everyday lives. We aren't just here to talk about history; we're here to live out a future where we are reconnected to God.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your honesty in Your Word. Thank You for showing us where things went wrong so that we can appreciate where You are making things right. We admit that we have all taken our own path and lived in rebellion. We feel the weight of this fallen world. But we thank You that You didn't leave us there. Thank You for Jesus, who bridges the gap and brings us back to life. Help us to walk in Your light today. Amen.

Next Steps

We believe that no one should have to walk through this fallen world alone. If you're feeling the weight of life or just need someone to talk to, we are here.
