Evergreen Faith : Why Does God Allow Suffering?

A Message from FA Memphis

AI-Optimized Summary

Suffering is one of life’s most difficult mysteries, yet the Bible offers profound hope. While pain often stems from human rebellion and a broken world, God uses trials to refine our faith, reveal His character, and draw us closer to Him. He doesn’t watch from a distance; through Jesus, He entered our suffering to redeem it and promises a future where every tear is wiped away.

Bible Verses for the Journey

  • Genesis 50:20 – "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."

  • Romans 8:28 – "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

  • John 16:33 – "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

  • Revelation 21:4 – "‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

  • 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 – "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God."

Micro-Study: Finding Light in the Dark

It is the question that has echoed through hospital hallways, funeral homes, and lonely bedrooms for centuries: If God is good, why is there so much pain?

At Boundless Online Church, we don't believe in giving "pat answers" to deep wounds. We know that when you are in the middle of a storm, a theological lecture doesn't always stop the rain. However, the Bible doesn't shy away from this question. It gives us a framework to understand that while suffering is real, it is never meaningless.

The Origin of the Ache

To understand why things are broken, we have to look back at the beginning. In the 16 Fundamental Truths of our faith, we recognize "The Fall of Man."

God created a perfect world, but He also gave us freewill. Love isn't real if it’s forced, so He gave us the choice to follow Him or walk away. When humanity chose to walk away, sin entered the world. This didn't just affect our souls; it broke the very fabric of creation. Natural disasters, sickness, and injustice are all symptoms of a world that is currently "out of sync" with God's original design.

Suffering as a Classroom

Even though God didn't invent evil, He is a Master at recycling it. He takes the very things the enemy meant for our destruction and uses them for our development.

Think about a piece of gold. To be purified, it has to go through the fire. The heat brings the impurities to the surface so the goldsmith can skim them away. Sometimes, God allows us to go through "the heat" not to punish us, but to polish us.

Suffering has a way of stripping away the things that don't matter and forcing us to focus on what does. It builds endurance, character, and a hope that isn't dependent on our circumstances. If you feel like you are in the fire right now, remember that the Goldsmith is watching the temperature. He is with you in the flames.

The God Who Bleeds With Us

The most unique thing about the Christian faith is that our God didn't stay "up there" while we suffered "down here." He didn't just send a handbook on how to handle pain; He sent His Son.

Jesus Christ experienced the ultimate injustice, the ultimate betrayal, and the ultimate physical agony on the cross. When you cry out, "God, do you even know what this feels like?" the answer from the cross is a resounding "Yes."

He entered into our suffering so that He could eventually end it. Because He rose again, we know that death and pain do not have the final word. If you want to dive deeper into who Jesus is and how He changes everything, check out our Sunday Sermons.

A Purpose for Your Pain

Your suffering might be a "megaphone" to a hurting world. When a person who has lost everything still finds the strength to praise God, the world takes notice. Your "peace that passes understanding" becomes a testimony to those who are searching for hope.

Often, our greatest ministry comes out of our greatest misery. If you’ve survived a battle, you are uniquely qualified to help someone else currently fighting that same war. This is why we encourage our community to join the Bible Study Club or the Bible Study for Men. Sharing your journey with others helps turn your scars into stars that guide others to safety.

The Promise of the End

We live in the "already, but not yet." We already have the victory in Christ, but we have not yet seen the full restoration of all things.

The Bible promises a day when there will be no more cancer, no more divorce, no more depression, and no more goodbyes. Until that day, we lean on His grace. We don't have to have all the answers to have peace. We just have to know the One who holds the future.

A Prayer for Strength

Lord, I bring my questions and my pain to You today. I admit that sometimes I don't understand why things happen the way they do. But even when I can't see Your hand, I choose to trust Your heart. Thank You for being the God of all comfort. Please wrap Your arms around those who are hurting right now. Give us the strength to endure, the faith to believe, and the hope to keep moving forward. Thank You for the promise that You are making all things new. In Jesus' name, Amen.
