The baptism in the Holy Spirit is essential today because it provides you with the supernatural power and boldness needed to witness for Christ and live a victorious Christian life. While salvation brings us into God’s family, the baptism in the Spirit empowers us to fulfill the Great Commission. This distinct experience, promised by Jesus, equips every believer with spiritual gifts and a divine strength that goes far beyond human effort.
What Does the Bible Say?
Before we dive into the "why," let’s look at the "what." The Word of God is clear about the role of the Spirit in the life of a believer.
Acts 1:8 (NIV)
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Acts 2:4 (NIV)
"All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."
Luke 24:49 (NIV)
"I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
Acts 10:44–46 (NIV)
"While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message... For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God."
Understanding the Promise
At Boundless Online Church, we often talk about how life’s hardest questions usually have answers rooted in God’s presence. When it comes to the baptism in the Holy Spirit, we are looking at one of the "Fundamental Truths" of our faith. Specifically, we lean into Assemblies of God Truth #7, which states that all believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father.
This isn't just a "Pentecostal thing" or a historical event that ended in the book of Acts. It is a vital, ongoing gift for the Church today. But why do we need it so badly in 2026?
1. Power for an Exhausting World
Let’s be honest: living out your faith in today’s world can be draining. Whether you are navigating the complexities of modern parenting, dealing with workplace stress, or trying to figure out if there is hope for your city, human willpower only goes so far.
The baptism in the Holy Spirit is described as being "clothed with power." Think of it as a spiritual upgrade. It’s the difference between trying to row a boat against the current and turning on a high-powered engine. This power isn't for our own ego; it’s for service. It gives us the "oomph" to keep going when we feel like quitting.

2. Boldness to Share Your Story
Many people feel shy or intimidated when it comes to talking about Jesus. We worry about saying the wrong thing or being judged. However, when you look at the disciples in the New Testament, something radical happened after Pentecost.
Peter, who had previously denied Jesus out of fear, stood up in front of thousands and preached with such authority that the world was changed. That same boldness is available to you. The baptism in the Holy Spirit provides a supernatural confidence. It helps you find the right words at the right time to help someone else meet Jesus.
3. A Deeper Connection in Prayer
One of the most profound aspects of the baptism in the Holy Spirit is the gift of tongues. According to AG Truth #8 (which goes hand-in-hand with Truth #7), the initial physical sign of the baptism in the Holy Spirit is "speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance."
While this can sometimes feel "churchy" or confusing to newcomers, it is actually a beautiful, casual way of communicating with God. It allows your spirit to pray when your mind doesn't have the words. It builds up your inner man and creates a sense of "calm power" that stays with you throughout the week, not just during Sunday live worship.
4. It Is Distinct from Salvation
It is important to understand that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is a separate experience from being "born again." When you accept Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within you: that’s how you are transformed and made new. But the baptism is an overflowing.
In the book of Acts, we see many instances where people were already believers but had not yet received the baptism in the Spirit. This distinction is crucial because it reminds us that there is always "more" in our walk with God. If you feel like your spiritual life has hit a plateau, this might be exactly what you are missing. You can learn more about our roots and how this movement began in our post on the history of the Assemblies of God.

5. Equipping the Body of Christ
The Church isn't a building; it’s a body. For that body to function properly, it needs the spiritual gifts that come through the empowerment of the Spirit. These gifts: like wisdom, healing, and discernment: are essential for the health of the community.
Whether we are gathering in Wednesday night family groups or connecting through a podcast, we need the Spirit’s guidance to move in the right direction. The baptism in the Holy Spirit ensures that the Church remains a living, breathing, and moving force rather than just a social club.
How Do You Receive This Gift?
If you’re wondering how to experience this for yourself, the answer is simpler than you might think. It isn't about being "perfect" or "holy enough." It’s a gift, and gifts are received by faith.
Ask: Jesus said the Father gives the Spirit to those who ask Him.
Believe: Trust that the promise is for you today.
Receive: Open your heart and yield to the Holy Spirit’s presence.
We believe that every believer should expect this experience. It’s part of the membership journey and the foundation of a Spirit-led life.

A Simple Prayer for Empowerment
Lord, thank You for the promise of the Holy Spirit. I recognize that I need Your power to live the life You’ve called me to live. I ask You right now to baptize me in Your Holy Spirit. Fill me to overflowing. Give me the boldness to witness, the strength to overcome, and a deeper hunger for Your presence. I receive this gift by faith. Amen.
