Healing & Recovery : Finding Freedom from Your Past - A Fresh Start in Jesus

A Message from FA Memphis

Finding freedom from a painful past or the cycle of addiction begins with a spiritual transformation in Jesus Christ. While behavioral changes are helpful, lasting recovery requires the restoration of the soul through God’s grace. By embracing the truth of salvation and releasing shame, you can move from a broken past into a purposeful future as a new creation in Christ.

The Weight We Carry

We all have a "before." For some of us, that "before" is marked by deep trauma, mistakes we wish we could erase, or years lost to addiction. It feels like a heavy backpack that we can’t quite take off. Even when we try to move forward, the straps dig in, reminding us of where we’ve been.

In the Assemblies of God, we recognize one of the 16 Fundamental Truths: The Fall of Man. It sounds like a heavy theological term, but it’s actually very relatable. It simply means that humanity was created good, but by voluntary transgression, we fell into sin. This fall brought about physical and spiritual death, and a separation from God.

That sense of "brokenness" you feel? That’s the reality of a world impacted by the Fall. When we struggle with addiction or the echoes of trauma, we are seeing the symptoms of a world that isn't the way God originally intended it to be. But the story doesn't end with the fall.

A Different Kind of Foundation

If you’ve tried to "clean yourself up" before, you know how exhausting it is. You make a resolution, you white-knuckle it for a few weeks, and then something happens, a trigger, a bad day, a lonely night, and you’re right back where you started.

True healing isn’t just about stopping a bad behavior; it’s about starting a new life.

The foundation of recovery in Jesus is another of our Fundamental Truths: Salvation. Man's only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. This isn't something you earn by being "good enough." It is a gift of grace.

When you accept Jesus, you aren't just a "recovering" version of your old self. You are a new creation. The Bible says the old has passed away and the new has come. This is the "Fresh Start" we all crave.

What the Bible Says About Your Recovery

It helps to have the Truth written on your heart when the shadows of the past start whispering. Here are a few anchors to hold onto:

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"

  • Romans 8:1: "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

  • Psalm 147:3: "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

  • Philippians 1:6: "...being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."

If you’re wondering, "How can I be sure I'm truly saved?" or if you’ve been away from God for a long time, you might find comfort in our guide on how to be sure of your salvation.

Breaking the Chains of Shame

Shame is the primary tool the enemy uses to keep people stuck in addiction and trauma. Guilt says, "I did something bad." Shame says, "I am bad."

If you believe you are fundamentally broken beyond repair, you will continue to act out of that brokenness. But Jesus didn't come to point a finger; He came to offer a hand. He took our shame upon Himself on the cross so that we wouldn't have to carry it anymore.

In our ministry, we often hear real stories of life change. These aren't stories of perfect people. They are stories of people who were at their lowest point, struggling with the same things you might be, who found that God’s grace was deeper than their deepest pit.

Recovery involves confronting those past hurts, not to live in them, but to bring them into the light. When you bring your secrets into the light of Christ, they lose their power over you.

Spiritual Transformation vs. Simple Abstinence

There is a big difference between being "dry" and being "free."

Simple abstinence is about what you don't do. Spiritual transformation is about who you are. Through prayer, reading the Word, and the power of the Holy Spirit, God begins to change your desires.

This is part of the "Sanctification" process. As we walk with Jesus, He slowly aligns our hearts with His. We start to find peace in the pause of a midday reset rather than looking for peace in a substance or a destructive relationship.

Healing Happens in Community

One of the biggest lies of addiction and trauma is that you are alone. The enemy wants to isolate you because "lonely" is where "vulnerable" lives.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe in the power of connection. Whether it’s through digital tools to stay connected to the Gospel securely or joining a community of believers who understand the struggle, you weren't meant to do this alone.

Healing is often a collective journey. We need brothers and sisters to hold up our arms when we are tired, to pray for us when we can’t find the words, and to remind us of who we are in Christ when we forget. If you’ve ever felt like you’re too ashamed to come back to God, please know that the door is always open.

Practical Steps for a Fresh Start

  1. Surrender: Acknowledge that you cannot do this on your own. Admit the need for a Savior.

  2. Forgive: This includes forgiving others who hurt you, but also forgiving yourself. If God has forgiven you, you have no right to hold a grudge against yourself.

  3. Replace: Don't just leave a "hole" where the addiction or habit was. Fill it with the Word, with prayer, and with healthy community.

  4. Stay Present: God is the God of the "now." He isn't dwelling in your past mistakes, so you don't have to either. Check out our Daily Waiting with Purpose for help staying focused on today.

A Prayer for Your Journey

Lord Jesus, I come to You today acknowledging my need for Your healing touch. I am tired of carrying the weight of my past, my mistakes, and my hurts. I believe that You died for me and that Your grace is enough to cover everything I’ve ever done.

I ask for Your forgiveness and for the strength to forgive myself. Renew my mind and heal my heart. Fill the empty spaces in my soul with Your Holy Spirit. Give me the courage to walk away from the things that harm me and the wisdom to walk toward the life You have planned for me. Thank You for a fresh start. Amen.
