Spiritual Warfare: Standing Firm in the Shadows

Ever had one of those days where it feels like everything is working against you?
Maybe you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, and then the coffee pot broke. Then a stressful email landed in your inbox. By noon, you’re snapping at your family, feeling a heavy cloud of anxiety, and wondering why your peace of mind vanished.
Sometimes, it’s just a bad day. But other times, there is something deeper going on.
In the Christian walk, we often talk about "spiritual warfare." For some, that phrase sounds like something out of a big-budget Hollywood movie: full of dramatic exorcisms and special effects. But for most of us, the battle is much quieter. It happens in the shadows of our thoughts, the whispers of our doubts, and the subtle ways we are pulled away from our purpose.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe that understanding this battle isn't about living in fear. It’s about learning how to stand firm in the light.
It’s Not Who You Think
When we feel attacked, our first instinct is to look for a person to blame. We blame our boss, our spouse, or the person who cut us off in traffic. But the Bible gives us a different perspective.
In Ephesians 6:12, it says: "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
This is a game-changer. If your struggle isn't against "flesh and blood," then your coworkers and neighbors aren't the real enemy. There is a spiritual reality behind the physical world. There are forces that want to see you discouraged, divided, and defeated.
When we realize this, we can stop fighting people and start standing against the real opposition. We can trade our frustration for prayer.

The Mission of the Church
Why does this matter so much? Because we have a mission.
One of the core beliefs we hold (specifically Assemblies of God Truth #10) is that the Church has a very specific mission. We aren't just a social club. We are an agency for God’s kingdom. Our job is to seek and save those who are lost, to worship God together, and to build up a body of believers who look like Jesus.
When you are in the middle of spiritual warfare, the enemy’s goal is to stop that mission.
If you are distracted by internal conflict or paralyzed by fear, you aren't sharing the hope of Jesus with others. If the Church is bogged down in "the shadows," we aren't being the light that the world needs. Standing firm isn't just about your personal comfort: it’s about protecting the mission of the Church.
We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. That mission is worth fighting for.
Fighting From Victory, Not For It
One of the biggest mistakes we can make is thinking we have to win this battle on our own.
The truth is, the victory has already been won. When Jesus died on the cross and rose again, He defeated the powers of darkness. As believers, we don't fight for victory; we fight from a position of victory.
Think of it like a game where the final score is already posted. The other team might still be running around the field, trying to cause trouble, but they’ve already lost. Your job isn't to defeat the enemy: Jesus did that. Your job is to stand your ground and refuse to give up the peace that belongs to you.
Equipping Yourself: The Armor of God
So, how do we practically stand firm? Paul gives us a list of "spiritual armor" in Ephesians 6. These aren't just abstract ideas; they are daily habits that keep us safe in the shadows.
1. The Belt of Truth
In the ancient world, a soldier’s belt held everything together. For us, truth is the foundation. The enemy is called the "father of lies." He wins by making you believe things that aren't true: that you aren't good enough, that God is mad at you, or that your situation is hopeless. Wrapping yourself in the truth of God’s Word keeps those lies from tripping you up.
2. The Breastplate of Righteousness
The breastplate protects the heart. We don't protect our hearts by being "perfect" on our own. We protect them by relying on the righteousness of Christ. When the shadows try to tell you that you’re a failure, you remember that in Jesus, you are a new creation.
3. The Shoes of Peace
Spiritual warfare is exhausting. You need shoes that allow you to stand firm and keep moving. The "gospel of peace" gives us a firm footing. No matter how rocky the ground gets, we have the peace of God to keep us steady.
4. The Shield of Faith
This is your primary defense. Faith isn't just a feeling; it’s a choice to trust God’s character over your circumstances. When "fiery arrows" of doubt or fear come your way, your faith acts as a shield that extinguishes them.
5. The Helmet of Salvation
The battle is often won or lost in the mind. The enemy loves to attack your thoughts. The helmet of salvation protects your thinking by reminding you who you belong to. You are saved, you are loved, and your future is secure.
6. The Sword of the Spirit
This is your only offensive weapon: the Word of God. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He didn't argue with the enemy. He quoted Scripture. There is power in the Word. If you’re feeling under pressure, find a verse that speaks to your situation and speak it out loud.

Standing Firm Together
While spiritual warfare can feel very personal, you were never meant to fight alone.
The Church is a "body" for a reason. When one part of the body is under attack, the rest of the body steps in to help. That’s why we value community so much at Boundless Online Church. Whether you are a shift worker joining us late at night or someone in a remote area, you are part of a global family.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by the "shadows" right now, don't retreat. Reach out. Join a Bible study club or connect with other men who are walking the same path. There is strength in numbers.
Practical Steps for the Shadows
If you feel like you’re in a season of spiritual opposition, here are a few simple things you can do today:
Audit Your Thoughts: Are you listening to the "shadows" or the Truth? If a thought brings fear, condemnation, or hopelessness, it’s probably not from God.
Stay in the Word: Even if it’s just one verse a day. Let God’s Word be the light that chases the shadows away.
Pray Constantly: Prayer isn't a formal speech; it’s a conversation. Talk to God about your fears and ask for His strength.
Find Your People: Don't isolate. Isolation is where the enemy does his best work. Stay connected to your church family.
You Are Not Alone
Spiritual warfare is a reality, but it doesn't have to be your identity. You are a child of God, equipped with His armor and backed by His power. The shadows may look intimidating, but they have no authority over the light of Christ living within you.
Are you facing a specific struggle right now? Do you have questions about how to use the "armor of God" in your daily life? We would love to hear from you and stand with you in faith.
