The First Steps: What Happens After You Say Yes to Jesus

You did it.

Maybe you were sitting in your living room, scrolling through your phone on a late-night shift, or finally attending a service online after months of "just watching."

You said "Yes" to Jesus.

It’s the most significant, life-altering decision you will ever make. But once the initial rush of emotion or the quiet peace of that moment settles, a very practical question usually follows:

What now?

If you’re feeling a mix of excitement and "I have no idea what I’m doing," you are in the right place. At Boundless Online Church, we help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. We know that the journey of faith isn't a sprint, it's a walk.

Let’s talk about those first few steps.

Understanding the "New You"

In the Assemblies of God, we believe in what we call "Salvation" (it’s our 5th Fundamental Truth).

But what does that actually mean for you right now?

It means that through your repentance (turning away from the old way of living) and your faith in Jesus Christ, you have been made new. The Bible uses a big word for this: regeneration.

Think of it as a spiritual "reset" button.

You aren't just a "better version" of your old self. You are a new creation. You’ve been "justified", which is a fancy way of saying that in God's eyes, because of Jesus, it’s "just as if" you had never sinned.

That’s a lot to take in, isn't it?

You don't have to earn this. You don't have to work for it. It is a gift of grace. Your first step is simply to rest in the fact that you are loved, accepted, and held by God.

Step 1: Start the Conversation (Prayer)

Imagine starting a new relationship and then never speaking to the person. It wouldn't grow very far, would it?

Faith is a relationship, not a religious checklist.

Prayer is simply talking to God. You don't need "thee" or "thou" or a specific posture. You can pray while you’re driving to work, while you’re folding laundry, or while you’re lying awake at 2:00 AM.

Try this simple structure if you’re stuck:

  • Thank Him: "God, thank you for loving me."

  • Ask Him: "Help me understand your plan for my day."

  • Listen: Spend a moment in quiet.

He wants to hear from you. He’s interested in your fears, your grocery list, and your biggest dreams.

Step 2: Feed Your Spirit (The Bible)

Just like your body needs food to function, your spirit needs "spiritual food." That’s what the Bible is.

If you’ve never read the Bible before, don’t start at the very beginning (Genesis) and try to power through the genealogies. Start with the book of John. It’s in the New Testament and it tells the story of Jesus, who He is, what He did, and why it matters.

Reading the Bible helps you recognize God's voice. The more you read, the more you’ll start to see how He sees the world.

If you want to dive deeper with others, we have several groups dedicated to exploring the Word together, like our Bible Study Club.

Step 3: Find Your Community

Faith was never meant to be a solo sport.

Whether you are a shift worker, someone living in a remote area, or a caregiver who can’t easily leave the house, you need people. We are a global family, and there are others just like you who are walking this same path.

Connecting with a church gives you:

  • Encouragement: People who will cheer you on.

  • Accountability: People who will help you stay on track.

  • Support: People who will pray for you when things get tough.

A great place to start is our I'm New Q&A Welcome Center. It’s a safe space to ask questions without feeling judged.

Step 4: The Public Proclamation (Baptism)

You might have heard about water baptism.

Think of baptism like a wedding ring. A ring doesn't make you married, but it tells the whole world that you are.

Baptism is an outward sign of the inward change that has already happened in your heart. It symbolizes your "old self" being buried and your "new self" rising to live for Christ.

If you haven’t been baptized yet, this is a beautiful and important step in your obedience to Jesus. Reach out to a local Bible-believing church or talk to us about how to make this happen in your community.

Step 5: Living It Out

Being a follower of Jesus changes how we treat people.

As you grow, you’ll find that your priorities start to shift. You might find yourself being more patient with your kids, more honest at work, or more compassionate toward your neighbors.

This isn't about being "perfect." You will still make mistakes. But now, you have the Holy Spirit living inside you, helping you to live a life that reflects Jesus.

We often call this "holy character." It’s the evidence that Jesus is truly at work in your life.

A Note for Our Global Family

We know that for many of you, following Jesus looks different depending on where you are.

If you are in an area where it isn't safe to openly practice your faith, please know that God sees you. Your "online" church home is just as real as a brick-and-mortar building.

If you are a late-shift worker or a caregiver, your "quiet time" might happen at 3:00 PM or 3:00 AM. That’s okay. God isn't bound by a clock, and neither is His grace.

We Are Here For You

This journey is just beginning. You don’t have to have it all figured out today.

Focus on the next right step. Read a chapter of John. Say a quick prayer. Join a discussion in one of our online groups.

And remember, you are never walking alone.

If you have questions about what you’re reading or if you just need someone to talk through these first steps with, please don't hesitate to reach out. We are a community built on welcoming everyone, no matter where they are on the map or in their faith.

Welcome to the family. The path ahead is bright, and the best is yet to come.
