Who is Jesus: Is He God or Just a Good Teacher?

If you ask ten different people who Jesus is, you will probably get ten different answers. Some see Him as a revolutionary, others as a philosopher, and many as just a "good teacher" who lived a long time ago. But at Boundless Online Church, we believe this question is the most important one you will ever answer. Is He just a man, or is He something more?
The "Good Teacher" Dilemma
Most people are comfortable with Jesus being a "good teacher." It feels safe. You can take His advice on loving your neighbor but ignore the parts that challenge your life. However, when we look at the historical record and the Bible, we run into a major problem with the "just a teacher" label.
C.S. Lewis, a famous writer and scholar, once pointed out a famous dilemma. He argued that a man who said the things Jesus said, claiming to forgive sins, claiming to be one with God, and claiming to be the only way to heaven, couldn't just be a "good moral teacher."
If those claims were false and He knew it, He was a liar. If those claims were false but He believed them, He was out of His mind. But if those claims were true, then He is exactly who He said He is: Lord.
We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and that starts by looking at what the Bible actually says about His identity.

What Does the Bible Say?
The Bible doesn’t leave much room for "just a teacher." From the very beginning of the New Testament, the writers are clear about who they believe Jesus is.
In John 1:1, it says:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
A few verses later, in John 1:14, it clarifies that "the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us." This is the core of the Christian faith, God didn't stay distant; He put on skin and bone and walked among us.
When Jesus asked His disciples, "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered in Matthew 16:16:
"You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
Jesus didn't correct Peter. He didn't say, "Wait, I’m just a teacher." Instead, He blessed Peter for recognizing the truth that had been revealed to him.
The Evidence of History
Some people think that the idea of Jesus being God was something the church made up hundreds of years later at big meetings like the Council of Nicaea. However, historical research shows us that the earliest Christians: the people who actually knew Jesus or lived right after Him: already worshipped Him as God.
Even the Apostle Paul, writing just decades after Jesus’ death, spoke of Jesus’ pre-existence. In Colossians 1:15-17, he writes:
"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible... all things have been created through him and for him."
The historical "receipt" for Jesus' divinity is the Resurrection. If Jesus had stayed in the grave, He would just be another tragic figure in history. But His followers were so convinced they saw Him alive again that they were willing to die for that belief. People don't die for a "good teacher." They die for a King.

Why This Matters for You Today
You might be reading this while on a break during a late-night shift, or perhaps you're at home caring for a loved one. You might feel like God is a million miles away.
If Jesus is just a teacher, then God is still far off, giving us rules from a distance. But if Jesus is God, it means He knows what it’s like to be tired. He knows what it’s like to be hungry, to be betrayed, and to suffer.
As part of our commitment to the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God, we believe in the "Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ." This isn't just a dusty theological point; it's a living hope. It means that when you pray, you aren't just talking to the ceiling. You are talking to a Savior who has the power to change your circumstances and the love to stay by your side through them.
If you are struggling for meaning, knowing the true identity of Jesus changes everything. It means your life has a purpose that was designed by the Creator of the universe.
Moving Beyond the Question
Deciding who Jesus is isn't just a mental exercise. It’s an invitation to a relationship. If He is God, then He is someone we can trust with our past, our present, and our future.
Maybe you’ve spent your life thinking of Him as a distant figure in a stained-glass window. Or maybe you've felt that the "churchy" version of Jesus doesn't fit the real-world struggles you face every day.
We invite you to look at Him again. Look at His compassion for the hurting, His strength against injustice, and His ultimate sacrifice on the cross. That isn't just the work of a good man; it’s the heart of a loving God.

A Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, I thank You that You didn't stay far away from us. Thank You for coming to earth to show us who God is. I admit that I don't have all the answers, but I want to know You for who You truly are. Open my heart to see You not just as a teacher, but as my Lord and my Savior. Give me peace today and help me to walk in Your truth. Amen.
Encouragement for the Week
As you go through your week, remember that you don't have to carry your burdens alone. Whether you are working the night shift, managing a busy household, or seeking answers in a difficult season, the God of the universe is interested in the details of your life.
Take a moment to read the Gospel of Mark this week. It’s short, fast-paced, and gives a vivid picture of Jesus in action. As you read, ask yourself: Are these the actions of just a teacher, or is this God among us?
If you have questions or just need someone to talk to about your faith journey, we are here for you. We love seeing people discover the hope that only Jesus provides.
