Community Growth : How Can You Find a Mentor in an Online Church?

A Message from FA Memphis

You find a mentor in an online church by actively engaging in virtual small groups, participating in digital community forums, and reaching out directly to ministry leaders who offer spiritual guidance. By building consistent digital connections, you can develop a meaningful relationship with a seasoned believer who provides accountability, wisdom, and prayerful support, helping you grow in your walk with Jesus Christ regardless of your physical location.

Bible Verses to Guide You

Proverbs 27:17 "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."

Titus 2:3-5 "Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live... Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure..."

1 Corinthians 11:1 "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ."

Hebrews 13:7 "Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith."

Finding Your Path to Spiritual Growth

The idea of finding a mentor can sometimes feel a little intimidating, especially in a digital space. You might wonder, "How can someone really know me through a screen?" or "Is it possible to have a deep spiritual connection without sitting across the table from someone?"

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that the Holy Spirit isn't limited by geography. Just as the early church grew through letters sent across the Roman Empire, we can grow through the digital tools available to us today. Finding a mentor is one of the most significant steps you can take in your walk with God. It’s about finding someone who has walked the path a little longer than you and is willing to help you navigate the hills and valleys of faith.

Why Mentorship Matters in the Digital Age

In a world that is more connected than ever yet often feels incredibly lonely, a mentor provides a point of stability. They aren't just a teacher; they are a spiritual friend. In the Assemblies of God tradition, we place a high value on "Spirit-empowered living." This means we don't just learn facts about God; we learn how to live in the power of the Holy Spirit every single day. A mentor helps you see how that power works in real life, in your parenting, your career, and your private struggles.

Step 1: Engage in Virtual Small Groups

The first and most effective way to find a mentor is to stop being a spectator and start being a participant. You won't find a mentor by just watching a stream; you find one by showing up where people know your name.

Joining a virtual small group is the "front door" to mentorship. When you join something like our Wednesday night family groups, you are placed in a circle of believers. Over time, you’ll notice someone whose faith you admire, someone who speaks with wisdom or handles trials with a peace that passes understanding. That person is a potential mentor.

Step 2: Look for the "Fruit"

When searching for a mentor, don't just look for someone who is charismatic or "tech-savvy." Look for the fruit of the Spirit in their lives. Are they kind? Are they patient? Do they have a deep love for the Word of God?

A good mentor should be someone who consistently points you back to Jesus, not to themselves. They should be grounded in the 16 Fundamental Truths, understanding that the Bible is our all-sufficient rule for faith and practice. If you are looking for guidance in a specific area, like healing and recovery, look for someone who has walked that specific road with God's grace.

Step 3: Make the "Digital Ask"

Once you’ve identified someone you connect with, don't be afraid to reach out. In an online church, this might mean sending a direct message after a Zoom Bible study or asking a leader if they have fifteen minutes for a video call.

You don't have to ask them to be your mentor for the rest of your life right away. Start small. Say, "I really appreciated what you shared in the group tonight. Could we chat for a bit about how you handle daily prayer?" Most seasoned believers are honored to share what they’ve learned. They are looking for ways to fulfill the Great Commission by making disciples, and your request helps them do just that.

The Logistics of Online Mentoring

Online mentoring actually has some unique advantages. You aren't limited by who lives in your zip code. You can find a mentor who truly understands your life situation, even if they are halfway across the world.

Here are a few tips to make it work:

  • Be Consistent: Set a regular time to meet via video call. Consistency builds trust.

  • Be Vulnerable: Mentorship only works if you are honest about your struggles. Whether you're a parent seeking daily devotionals or a caregiver looking for rest in Jesus, being real is the key.

  • Be a Learner: Come to your meetings with questions. Have a notebook ready. Value their time by being prepared.

Growing Together in the Spirit

As you seek out a mentor, remember that the ultimate goal is to grow in your relationship with Christ. A mentor is a guide, but Jesus is the Destination. We want to see every member of the Boundless community moving toward spiritual maturity, understanding deep truths like the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and the assurance of God's forgiveness.

Don't wait for a "perfect" moment to start looking. The community is already here, waiting for you to jump in. Whether you are looking for a deep Bible study or just a sister or brother in Christ to hold you accountable, the first step is simply saying "hello."

A Prayer for Divine Connection

"Heavenly Father, I thank You that You never intended for us to walk the path of faith alone. You created us for community and for connection. I ask right now that You would open doors for a mentoring relationship in my life. Lead me to a man or woman of God who can speak truth into my life, challenge me to grow, and encourage me when I am weary. Help me to be bold in reaching out and humble in receiving instruction. May every connection I make in this online church bring me closer to the heart of Jesus. In His name, Amen."
