Knowing God’s will is less about finding a hidden treasure map and more about building a relationship with the Creator. By grounding yourself in Scripture, staying sensitive to the Holy Spirit, and seeking wise counsel, you can discern His path. This guide explores how to align your heart with God’s purposes, ensuring your decisions reflect His character and lead to a life of peace and fulfillment in Christ.
What the Word Says
Before we dive into the "how-to," let’s look at the foundation. God isn't trying to hide His plans from you. He wants to be known.
Romans 12:2 (NIV): "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will."
Psalm 119:105 (NIV): "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV): "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
James 1:5 (NIV): "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."

It’s a Relationship, Not a Formula
One of the biggest hurdles we face when asking "What is God's will?" is that we treat it like a GPS destination. We want the "turn-by-turn" directions before we even pull out of the driveway.
But God is much more interested in the passenger than the destination.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe that God’s primary will for your life is that you know Him. If you are walking closely with Jesus, the specific "where" and "what" usually start to take care of themselves. When your heart is aligned with His, your desires begin to mirror His desires.
Step 1: Start with the Revealed Will
If you want to know the "hidden" things of God, start by doing the things He has already clearly written down.
In the 16 Fundamental Truths, the very first truth is the Inspired Authority of the Scriptures. This means the Bible is our "all-sufficient rule for faith and practice."
Does God want you to take that job? Well, does that job require you to be dishonest? If so, you already have your answer. God will never lead you into something that contradicts His Word. His "general will": that we be holy, kind, evangelistic, and loving: is the framework for His "specific will."
Step 2: The Power of a Renewed Mind
Romans 12:2 tells us that we discern God's will by renewing our minds. This isn't just a mental exercise; it's a spiritual transformation.
When we spend time in worship, listen to Sunday Sermons, and engage in prayer, our "spiritual ears" get tuned to the right frequency. Think of it like a radio. If there’s too much static from the world: social media, stress, or constant noise: it’s hard to hear the broadcast.
Renewing your mind clears the static.

Step 3: Listen for the Holy Spirit
As a Pentecostal ministry, we place a high value on the active work of the Holy Spirit. If you’ve ever wondered what Pentecostal means, a big part of it is believing that God still speaks and guides His people today through the Spirit.
Jesus called the Holy Spirit "The Helper." He didn't leave us to guess. Sometimes the Spirit speaks through a "still, small voice" in your heart, a sudden sense of peace about a decision, or even a "check" in your spirit that tells you to wait.
If you’re in a season of waiting and feeling frustrated, you’re not alone. Check out our resource on Waiting with Purpose to find encouragement while you listen for that next step.
Step 4: Seek Wise Counsel
God often speaks through other people. You weren't meant to figure out life in a vacuum.
Proverbs tells us that there is safety in an abundance of counselors. This doesn't mean asking twenty people until you find one who agrees with you. It means finding mature believers who know the Word and know you.
Our Clarion Call Bible Study and our various community groups are great places to find that kind of community. Whether you're a world traveler or a late-shift worker, connecting with others helps verify what you think God is saying.

Step 5: Check Your Gifts and Passion
God is a Master Designer. He doesn't give you a talent for music and then call you to be an accountant if you hate math (unless He’s doing something really wild!).
Look at how He made you. What are you good at? What makes your heart beat faster for the Kingdom? Often, God’s will is found right at the intersection of your greatest joy and the world's greatest need. Using your God-given gifts for His glory is a central part of His plan for you.
The Three "Lights" of Guidance
A famous preacher once described finding God's will like a ship entering a harbor. The pilot looks for three lights to line up perfectly. When they are in a straight row, the ship is on the right course.
The Light of the Word: Is it biblical?
The Light of the Spirit: Do I have internal peace?
The Light of Circumstances: Are the doors opening or closing?
If you have a Bible verse that supports it, a peace in your heart from the Holy Spirit, and the practical doors are opening, you can move forward with confidence!

What if I Make a Mistake?
This is the fear that paralyzes most of us. "What if I miss it? What if I take the wrong path and ruin God's plan?"
Here is the beautiful truth: God is bigger than your mistakes. If your heart is truly seeking Him, He is faithful to get you where you need to go. Even if you take a wrong turn, the Good Shepherd knows how to find His sheep and bring them back to the right path.
Focus more on the Guide than the Guidance. If you stay close to the Guide, you'll never be truly lost.
A Prayer for Guidance
Lord, I come to You today seeking Your direction. Sometimes the path ahead looks foggy, and I’m not sure which way to turn. I thank You that You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Help me to quiet the noise of the world so I can hear Your voice. Renew my mind through Your Word. Give me the courage to walk through the doors You open and the wisdom to accept the ones You close. I trust that You are leading me for Your glory and my good. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
